“Democracy is like a cat. Ignore it too long, and it’ll climb on your chest at 3 a.m. demanding your immediate attention.”
-This Puzzled Life
Light the charcoal. Sprinkle the royal blue glitter. Invoke my proud ancestors. Summon Great-Grandma Earlene. Who once chased a crooked snake across three counties with a broom and a prayer. Call upon Uncle Bubba the Wise. Who believed every citizen deserved a voice. Even if that citizen occasionally licked their own butt in public. And let all my long line of Mississippi ancestors smile down from the heavens. Because today their legacy of civic participation has reached its highest form.
My cats voted. Not only did they vote. They voted blue. Every single fur-covered democratic socialist. Election Day started with chaos, as most important historical events do. Piper, Coco, and Tinkerbell emerged from the bedroom wearing matching royal blue T-shirts. Piper’s shirt boldly declared, “PROUD RADICAL LEFT LUNATIC CAT. DON’T HISS ME OFF.” Coco’s shirt announced, “IMMIGRANTS DIDN’T EAT THIS CAT.” And Tinkerbell, never one to be subtle, strutted around displaying, “STAND AGAINST THE ORANGE TABBY ADMINISTRATION.” I knew right then that democracy was fixing to get loud.

They marched toward the local voting precinct like furry civil rights activists with whiskers and unresolved rage. As we approached the building, we encountered what historians will someday call The Red Hat Brigade. The group stood outside muttering things like, “Look at them Dumocrats.” “Typical libtards.” And “Those cats been watching too much CNN.”
Now, Piper is many things. Judgmental. Vindictive. Capable of holding a grudge for six fiscal quarters. But she is not one to suffer fools gladly. The cats exchanged a look. A slow look. A look that said, Oh, bless their hearts. Then Coco stepped forward and addressed the crowd. “Y’all keep talking about family values. But have you ever tried supporting your weird cousin. Respecting people’s rights. And minding your own business?” The silence could’ve been bottled and sold. Tinkerbell adjusted her tiny shirt and said, “We’ve reviewed your application for family values.” “And?” someone asked. “Denied” she said.
At that point, all three cats stood shoulder-to-shoulder. Tails high. Whiskers forward. Democracy in their eyes. And in perfect unison…HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. Then they flipped the entire crowd the paw. Both paws, actually. Inspired by the one and only ANTIFA Sue. Piper had been practicing.
Inside the precinct, the cats took voting very seriously. Piper proudly voted for protecting the LGBTQIA+ community. “Everybody deserves to be themselves. Unless they’re trying to vacuum the house.” she declared. Reasonable position. Coco voted for women’s rights. “Women should control their own bodies. Also, nobody controls my body. I’ve bitten veterinarians for less”” she announced. Again, hard to argue. Tinkerbell focused on affordability. Specifically cat treats. “Have you seen the price of salmon snacks lately? At this rate I’m gonna have to take out a second mortgage on the scratching post” she yelled. She wasn’t wrong. Inflation has officially reached Fancy Feast levels.

The cats also shared one issue that united them above all others. Protein choice. Not because they wanted new proteins. Quite the opposite. They absolutely did not want anyone changing proteins. They had finally settled on one. After sixteen rejected brands. Seven hunger strikes. Three dramatic floor-flops. And an incident involving duck pâté that nobody discusses anymore. “We don’t want new proteins. We want new senators.” Piper declared. The polling workers nearly fell out of their chairs.
After voting, the cats strutted out of the precinct like tiny furry legislators returning from a successful bipartisan nap. The Red Hat Brigade was still outside. One guy shouted, “How’d voting go?” Piper smiled. That terrifying little smile cats get right before knocking something expensive onto the floor. “Wonderful! We participated in democracy,” she said. Then she paused. “And unlike some humans, we didn’t try to overturn the results by knocking over the ballot box.” Mic. Drop. Hairball. Whatever. Same energy.
As the sun set over Mississippi. And the royal blue glitter settled gently upon the earth. My cats returned home feeling proud, empowered, and mildly hungry. They had defended democracy. They had stood up for equality. They had fought for affordable treats. And most importantly, they had reminded everyone that citizenship isn’t about fear, anger, or who can yell the loudest. It’s about showing up. Casting your vote. Respecting your neighbors. And occasionally hissing at foolishness when foolishness absolutely refuses to leave.
So, if three judgmental house cats can walk into a voting precinct wearing political T-shirts. Endure a barrage of nonsense. Double flipped a synchronized paw. And still believe in democracy. The rest of us can probably manage too. And if not? Well. The cats are taking applications for a new Congress. Requirements include litter-box training, basic empathy, and the ability to mind your own damn business. Thanks for reading! And GO VOTE BLUE FOR DEMOCRACY!
Democracy Affirmation: I am stronger than internet arguments. Wiser than conspiracy memes. And more determined than a cat headed toward a plate of unattended chicken. I will stand up for others. Speak my truth. And remember that no matter how chaotic the world gets, I still have the right to flip life’s foolishness the paw and keep moving forward.
