The Blood on Mississippi Soil: Why Silence Is No Longer an Option

“Silence is the oldest accomplice of violence. And Mississippi has been silent for far too long.”

-This Puzzled Life

Light the charcoal, y’all. Because my ancestors are pacing the porch tonight. I can feel them in the humidity, the cicada buzz, and in the way the air gets thick right before a storm. They’re whispering. Tapping their feet. And shaking their heads the way old Southern aunties do when they’ve had enough of the foolishness. And Lord knows Mississippi has given us more than enough foolishness wrapped in Bible verses. Dipped in denial. And served with a side of “the South will rise again” delusion.

Because let’s tell the truth. The “Christian” community down here loves to shout about sin until it’s time to call out violence against Black bodies. Then suddenly everybody’s quiet. Clutching pearls. And humming hymns like silence is salvation. They’ll condemn a teenager’s skirt length before they condemn a system that keeps killing Black people. They’ll preach forgiveness while refusing accountability. They’ll talk about “God’s love” while ignoring the blood on their own soil. And I’m done pretending that’s holy.

Mississippi has always been a place where racism isn’t just a belief. It’s infrastructure. It’s policy. It’s tradition. It’s the foundation poured into the dirt generations ago. And too many folks still treat it like sacred ground.

And now, again, violence has come knocking at the doors of Black families. Again, the state government refuses to investigate. Again, accountability disappears when the killer is white. Again, we are told to “wait for the facts.” While the facts are buried under good ol’ boy politics and backroom handshakes.

A one-year-old Black baby was shot and killed by a white officer over diapers. Let me say that again. A baby died because a grown man with a badge felt threatened by diapers.

A Black teenage boy was found dead under mysterious circumstances. And instead of answers, we get a cover-up thicker than Delta mud. Evidence missing. Stories changing. Officials shrugging like a child’s life is just a paperwork inconvenience.

And now, a Black woman found hanging from a tree in 2026. And the state wants us to believe it’s anything other than what it looks like. Mississippi has a long, violent history with Black bodies and trees. We know what this is. We’ve seen it before. Our ancestors saw it before. And the silence from leadership is louder than any confession.

This isn’t coincidence. This isn’t isolated. This is a pattern, a legacy, and a sickness that Mississippi refuses to treat because too many people benefit from the infection. And let me tell you something. I’m old enough now to stand up and say it plainly. I’m old enough to fight for marginalized groups which include Black folks, brown folks, Indigenous folks, immigrants, and anyone who doesn’t fit the whitewashed mold Mississippi keeps trying to force us into. I’m old enough to say that I’m proud that I didn’t buy into the racist ideology that some of my own family members still cling to like it’s heirloom china.

I broke the cycle. I chose humanity over heritage. I chose truth over tradition. I chose justice over comfort. And if that makes me the black sheep at the family reunion, hand me the potato salad because I’ll graze in the pasture with pride. I’m proud to say I’m not like them. Not molded by their fear. Not shaped by their hate. Not carved into the same brittle statue of “tradition” they keep worshiping like it’s holy. I’m proud to say I crawled out of the same Mississippi clay. And still managed to grow in a different direction. And it was one that didn’t twist my roots around racism and call it heritage.

If rejecting their ideology means I lose my seat at the family table, then pull the chair out from under me. If refusing to swallow their silence means I’m no longer welcome in their church pews, then let the hymns echo without me. If choosing humanity over hypocrisy means I have to walk away from religion entirely, then I’ll walk away barefoot. Head high and unbothered.

Because I refuse to be loyal to a system that kills Black children and calls it “procedure.” I refuse to be loyal to a state that covers up Black death and calls it “ongoing investigation.” I refuse to be loyal to a community that sees a Black woman hanging from a tree and calls it “unfortunate.” I refuse to be loyal to people who hide behind scripture while ignoring suffering. I refuse to be loyal to any ideology that demands my silence while it destroys lives.

Mississippi may be built on racism. But I am not. Mississippi may cling to its racist past. But I do not. Mississippi may worship its own mythology. But I refuse to kneel. I am not like them. I will never be like them. And if breaking away from their beliefs is the cost of protecting my soul, integrity, and humanity, then that’s a price I’ll pay in full with no regrets.

Let them keep their “South will rise again” fantasies. I’m rising in a different direction. One they can’t touch. Can’t claim. And sure as hell can’t control. That’s my mic drop. And I won’t be picking it back up. Thanks for reading! What are your thoughts?

Affirmation: I honor my ancestors by refusing to repeat their pain. I stand in truth. I stand in courage. And I stand in love even when I stand alone.

A Prayer So Wild Even the Angels Clocked Out Early

“Some prayers lift the spirit. Others just lift the eyebrows.”

-This Puzzled Life

Light the charcoal. Sprinkle the sage. Hide your children, your casseroles, and your common sense. Because what I witnessed at that unfortunate local Mississippi event wasn’t a prayer. It was a theological Nascar crash. And every angel in heaven refused to file the insurance claim.

Picture it. A field full of red hats bobbing like a colony of patriotic mushrooms. The air thick with humidity, Axe body spray, and generational resentment. A folding table sagging under the weight of mayonnaise‑based salads. And a speaker system held together with duct tape and denial.

Then he stepped forward. The Chosen One of the Red‑Hat Prayer Circle. A man built like a refrigerator with opinions. A man whose shirt had more eagles than the actual sky. A man who looked like he’d been baptized in Monster Energy. He grabbed the microphone like he was about to drop a mixtape called “Gospel of the Grievance.”

He clears his throat like he’s about to summon the Holy Ghost, the founding fathers, and the HOA board all at once. And then. Lord help us. He opened his mouth.

What came out was not a prayer. It was not a blessing. It was not even a coherent sentence structure. It was a spiritual Yelp review written by a man who thinks the Holy Trinity is God, Country, and Bathroom Legislation. Then he begins The Prayer. The one that made the angels file HR complaints.

“Heavenly Father. We come before you today under this blessed Mississippi sun. Which you made hotter every year to punish the radical left for their wickedness.

Lord, we know that every single problem in this world can be traced back to them. The hurricanes? The liberals. The price of eggs? The liberals. My gout flaring up last Tuesday? Father God, that was the liberals too.

And Lord, we thank you that our sins don’t count. Because we carry the “Jesus Warranty.” We swipe it like a rewards card. We sin. We repent. We sin again. And you just keep stamping that little heavenly punch card. But the liberals, Lord? Unforgivable. They are the real ones on the predatory registry. Not all the republicans. But that’s none of my business, Father.

Lord, we thank You that here in Mississippi, we stay focused on the things that matter most like genitals, bathrooms, and our loyal governor who kneels so faithfully before the Orange Messiah. He bends the knee so hard, Lord, he’s got calluses shaped like patriotism.

Father, we lift up the windmills to you. Those demonic pinwheels of destruction. They’re out there slaughtering birds. Driving whales insane. And screaming so loud they give people cancer. Lord, we know the whales are acting up because they can’t handle the noise. They’re liberals at heart, Father. Sensitive. Emotional. Always protesting something.

And Lord, we rebuke the immigrants who are coming here to eat our dogs and cats. We know this because someone’s cousin’s neighbor’s Facebook post said so. And that’s good enough for us.

Father, protect us from the left trying to make everyone gay and transgender. They’re out here handing out pronouns like coupons. Even though they say that pronouns are in the English language. And that’s also a hoax. Next thing you know, my truck’s gonna identify as a Prius.

Lord, we thank you for the brave idea of firing nuclear weapons into hurricanes. We know it would’ve worked if the deep state hadn’t interfered. We thank you for the tariffs on penguins, Father. The money is pouring in. We don’t know where from. But it’s pouring in.

We thank you for answering our prayer about gasoline. It’s the lowest it’s ever been. Even though the sign says otherwise. But we don’t read numbers. Lord numbers are liberal. We thank you for the funds for the Pedophile Patio at the White House. We don’t know what it is. But the liberals said it’s bad. So, it must really be good. And that’s enough for us.

Lord, we ask You to bless our crosses. Which absolve us of all wrongdoing. We wear them proudly, Father, even when we’re screaming at cashiers or crashing Grindr. Not that we’ve ever crashed Grindr. That was the liberals.

And Father, we rebuke the rumors about ladybugs we may or may not have contracted from Lindsey “Lady” Graham. We don’t have them. We’ve never had them. We don’t think. That’s the liberals’ fault too. Lord, we pray for this nation. We pray for our bathrooms. We pray for our genitals. We pray for our Orange Messiah. And we pray that you continue to forgive us instantly while holding everyone else accountable forever. In your holy, conservative, red‑hat‑approved name we pray. Amen.”

As the final “Amen” echoed across the field. Bounced off the port‑a‑potties. Ricocheting through the humidity. And startling at least three confused squirrels. I realized something profound. This wasn’t a prayer. This was a confession disguised as patriotism. A spiritual tantrum. A theological meltdown. A holy‑ghost‑free revival sponsored by conspiracy theories and lukewarm potato salad.

The red‑hat faithful walked away feeling forgiven. Justified. And spiritually moisturized. Not because they’d repented. But because they’d shouted loudly enough to drown out their own guilt. Meanwhile, the rest of us stood there blinking like we’d just witnessed a raccoon steal a wedding cake.

If delusion had a megachurch, this prayer would’ve been the keynote speaker. If hypocrisy had a hymn book, this prayer would’ve been track one. If nonsense had a national anthem, this prayer would’ve been sung at every football game.

And here’s my final word. May we all be delivered from prayers that sound like Facebook comments. May our humor stay sharp. Our queerness stay loud. And our spirits stay unbothered. And may the next local event have better food, better theology, and fewer polyester hats. Thanks for reading! And thank you for your attention to this matter. Praise Be To Allah!

Affirmation: I stand rooted in truth, humor, and queer resilience. No amount of red‑hat chaos can shake my spirit or dim my brilliance.

Invisible Drones, Algae Shots & Cage Fights on the Lawn: America Has Officially Lost the Plot

“If the government wanted to distract us, they should’ve at least been successful at cleaning the pool first.”

-This Puzzled Life

Light the charcoal. Sprinkle the sage. Tell the ancestors to bring EVERYTHING. Because today, we are grilling the latest chapter in the Trump Administration’s™ ongoing performance art piece titled: “What If Government, But Make It Walmart at 2 AM?”

My ancestors, who survived famine, war, plagues, the Great Depression, disco, and the invention of mayonnaise‑based salads, are hovering in the afterlife clutching rosaries, moonshine, and emotional support cigarettes. They whisper, “We did not cross oceans for this.” “We did not survive smallpox for this.” “We did not wear powdered wigs for this.” And yet. Here we are.

The White House lawn, sorry, the People’s Patch of Grass, has once again been transformed into a white‑trash UFC arena. Where sweaty men roll around in a cage like they’re auditioning for Magic Mike: Government Shutdown Edition.

The cage sits in the middle of the grass like someone ordered “UFC but make it emotionally repressed” off Wish. Tourists gather. Security pretends this is normal. And a lineup of men who look like they pre‑gamed with creatine, Axe body spray, and a quick scroll through Grindr. They begin stretching like they’re preparing for the world’s sweatiest Pride after‑party. Because nothing says “governing” like two shirtless dudes rolling around in a cage while America collectively whispers, “Is this foreign policy or foreplay?”

Piper: “Mother, why are the humans fighting in a metal box? Is this a mating ritual? Should we be concerned?”

Coco: “I’ve seen less homoerotic tension in a gay sauna on half‑price margarita night.”

Tinkerbell: “I’m only here for the snacks. Also, someone needs to drain that pool before it becomes sentient.”

And then, because absurdity must always escalate, the Trump Administration announces a fake assassination attempt involving Iranian drones that no one saw. No one heard. No one reported. And no one can explain. Because apparently even the drones were like, “Nah, we’re good.”

Suddenly, a man in a suit sprints across the lawn screaming, “THERE WAS AN ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT!” Everyone freezes. The fighters stop mid‑grapple. The tourists gasp. My cats blink.

Piper: “Mother, what?”

Coco: “By who? The drama club?”

Tinkerbell: “I bet it’s fake.”

And then the details emerge. The threat was Iranian drones. The drones were invisible. The attack was unconfirmed. The evidence was classified. The witnesses were busy. And the drones were never actually here. So basically, it was a crisis that didn’t happen. It was  reported by people who weren’t there. And it was involving drones that don’t exist.

Piper: “Mother, is this enrichment?”

Coco: “This is why aliens won’t visit us.”

Tinkerbell: “I’ve had hairballs more credible than this.”

Meanwhile, the Reflecting Pool…

Once majestic. Now the color of a Shrek smoothie. Flaking blue paint drifting like sad confetti. A smell that says, “Someone dumped a bucket of hot dog water in here.”

Piper: “Is that algae?”

Coco: “Is that paint peeling?”

Tinkerbell: “Is that the symbolic decay of national integrity?”

Me: “Yes, girls. Yes it is.”

And the Trump Administration never misses a chance to monetize national embarrassment. They announce the newest grift called:

THE PATRIOT PACK™ -$250

  • One (1) clump of algae harvested by an unpaid intern.
  • One (1) authentic blue paint chip scraped by a man named Randy who definitely vapes.
  • One (1) certificate of authenticity printed on a Chili’s receipt.

All in honor of the 250th Celebration of America, which would make the Founding Fathers want to walk into the ocean. Fake their own deaths. Or rise from the grave just to say, “We didn’t write the Constitution for this.” My ancestors join in from the spirit realm, “We crossed oceans for this?” “We survived smallpox for this?” “We lived through powdered wigs for this?” Great‑Aunt Myrtle adds, “At least the men are pretty.”

Enter: Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

Just when the chaos reaches peak humidity, a new figure emerges wearing flip‑flops, necklace of raccoon teeth, and the confidence of someone who once drank kombucha brewed in a boot. He steps up to a podium made of reclaimed pallets and emotional instability. He clears his throat. And announces, “THE REFLECTING POOL IS A MIRACLE.”

My cats freeze. My ancestors clutch their ghostly pearls. Tourists stop mid‑selfie. He continues, “This nutritious, peroxide‑infused, snake‑venom‑enhanced, algae is the future of American health.”

Piper: “Mother… is he okay?”

Coco: “Absolutely not.”

Tinkerbell: “I don’t want whatever he’s on.”

He waves a mason jar of glowing green sludge like it’s holy water from the Church of Whole Foods. He declares that one 8‑oz glass of Reflecting Pool Algae™ can cure Ebola, depression, substance abuse, homelessness, addiction, dementia, low sperm count, cancer, mental illness, autism, low birth rates, AIDS, seasonal allergies, Hanta virus, screwworm, Covid 1-19, bad vibes, accidental or intentional snake bites, rabies from raccoons, and “the spiritual constipation of the American soul.”

Piper: “Mother, that’s not how biology works.”

Coco: “That’s not how anything works.”

Tinkerbell: “I’m still not willing to try it.”

And of course it gets worse. He also announces the algae’s potency is enhanced by “a micro‑dose of raccoon penile essence. Which was harvested ethically from raccoons who died of natural causes such as bar fights or eating fireworks.” My ancestors scream in Latin. Piper faints. Coco gags. Tinkerbell whispers, “I knew raccoons were up to something.”

Some people cheer. Some people vomit. One man tries to buy a gallon jug. Another asks if it comes in sugar‑free. A woman from Ohio asks if it’s keto. He assures them, “It’s paleo, keto, vegan, carnivore, gluten‑free, dairy‑free, guilt‑free, and spiritually orgasmic.”

The Trump Administration immediately embraces the miracle. They announce a national algae initiative. A Reflecting Pool bottling plant. A Raccoon Essence Research Grant. A Buy One, Get One Half‑Off Patriot Pack™ And a new slogan, “Drink Up, America.” My ancestors begin drafting a petition to be reincarnated as Canadians.

And the leader of our horrifically spiraling country, President Donald Trump, is the man that governs like a Roomba with a dying battery. In the middle of the chaos, the cage match, the algae sales pitch, the invisible drones, the raccoon‑essence wellness seminar, he decided it was the perfect moment to take one of his signature American taxpayer funded, mini-stroke, dementia public naps, which his staff insists on calling “extended blinking” or “patriotic micro‑rest cycles.” Cameras zoomed in as his eyelids began performing what can only be described as a slow‑motion garage door malfunction. They were fluttering like a moth trapped in a lampshade. Tourists whispered, “Is he meditating?” While my cats debated whether he was buffering. Rebooting. Or experiencing yet another mini‑stroke‑adjacent moment that his administration would later blame on “wind fatigue.” Piper tilted her head. Coco rolled her eyes. Tinkerbell muttered, “Mother, the man is power‑napping through the downfall of civilization.” And honestly? She wasn’t wrong.

At the end of the day, America doesn’t need algae smoothies, raccoon penis extract, invisible drone attacks, cage fights on federal property, or $250 commemorative mold. We need accountability. We need sanity. We need leadership that doesn’t involve drinking pond scum like it’s a wellness shot from Satan’s juice bar.

And no matter how many shiny, chaotic, homoerotic lawn events the Trump Administration throws at us, the American people have not forgotten about the Epstein files. Nice try, Donald! Charcoal extinguished. Cats disgusted. Ancestors filing complaints. Nation still watching. Thanks for watching! What do you think of the embarrassing events that was supposed to celebrate our country?

Affirmation: I am grounded. I am powerful. And I refuse to be gaslit by algae, drones, raccoon essence, or commemorative mold.

No Kings 2.0

“There are no kings in America. Only gilded me we can topple again and again.”

-Aileen Cassinetto

Light the charcoal. Sprinkle the sage. Negative energy go away. Today, I want to talk to you about our country for a moment. I don’t usually write much about politics on my blog. Social media is quite different. However, we are currently experiencing unprecedented times. Which is causing so much collateral damage that it could take several presidents to undo what is being done if that is even possible.

When my boys come to visit we always talk about current things like school, everyday life, personal wants, “would you rather” and the current political environment. And to be honest, I never thought I would have to explain basic human rights and how those are egregiously being destroyed. And now the decisions of a lot of Americans have put in power a want to be dictator.

I wrote a blog this past month that recently posted about how good we have it in our country. And now I must retract that statement by tell you that the United States of America, the threat to democracy and the very essence of our lives are now being tailored for a fascist society. And the “American Spirit,” which is not a person, is being made a mockery of the founding fathers’ original intentions. Let me break it down.

Our Foundational Ideas

·        Liberty and Independence: The freedom to think, speak, and act as one chooses without infringing on the rights of others.

·        Self-government: The belief that citizens are the ultimate source of authority and have the right to participate in the political process.

·        Equality: The idea that all people are created equal and deserve fair treatment, respect, and dignity, with equal opportunities for success.

·        Individualism: The belief that individuals are in control of their own destinies and can achieve self-sufficiency and independence through their own initiative (https:study.com, 2025).

Aspirations of the American Dream

·        The promise of opportunity: Anyone can achieve success through sacrifice, risk-taking, and hard work.

·        Upward social mobility: The change for individuals to attain a better life than their parents.

·        A “democracy of goods”: The notion that everyone should have access to material comfort and goods, a vision popularized in the 20th century (https://www.wikipedia.org, 2025).

I now must again explain to my children how racism, at its core, is just wrong in every way. And how the example of the highest position, in our once revered democracy is being dismantled one freedom and one right at a time. And how if someone disagrees with someone’s way of life, you must not fear and/or hate them. I have instructed my children from day one that people and families are unique individually. And just because of their uniqueness, it doesn’t mean that they are wrong. I don’t care about your skin color, religious affiliation, political affiliation, sexual orientation, ethnic background, or gender identity. However, what I don’t like are bullies. And currently we have a bully in power.

I don’t hate no matter how far left or far right you are on the spectrum. But the idea of hating and inciting violence against someone because they are different is not ok. Do I like people like Charlie Kirk? Hell no. Do I think that he deserved to be murdered based on his views, regardless of whether I agreed with him or the fact that he was a racist and a homophobe, never. But when your whole premise of the stage that you voluntarily inject yourself onto is about treating those you disagree with by tearing them down, bad things are bound to happen. And when political views and votes are more important than lives of our citizens and our beautiful immigrants, our tears begin to fall.

When the president of the United States who has 34 felony convictions, and whose best friends were  the vilest child sex trafficker and rapists this country has ever seen, while also having the support of others, it must be discussed and stopped. Jeffery Epstein and Ghislane Maxwell were convicted of some of the most horrible crimes against children. And it has been confirmed that Donald Trump’s name, as well as many others, were also listed in the Epstein files.

As a parent and someone who was also preyed upon by those in power, the only logical decision of our government should be to release the unredacted files and have total transparency. This  shouldn’t be a tall order. I see a lot of people online who voted for Donald talking about how evil Jefferey Epstein was. And how pedophiles should be held accountable, unless you talk about the high probability that Donald Trump is also connected to said crimes.

I have never seen so many lies and an obvious cover up by the United States government in my life. I don’t care whose names, whether they be democrats, republicans, independents or royalty, are on the list. They should all be held accountable. And for some of us, whose perpetrators were never held accountable, this is a national symbol of that fight for justice. And just maybe the bad guys get caught in the end and have to pay for their actions that have ruined upwards of a thousand children’s lives.

When you are forced into something as horrific as sexual abuse, your life is forever changed. You will never view the world as “safe” again. You will never look at the average person the same again. And the most intimate part of a person’s life and body are forever damaged. The lies and manipulation that one has to possess to accomplish these acts are more than I can comprehend.

It is my hope and prayer that whoever has taken part in actions consistent with pedophilia, rape and/or the coverup of these crimes will see the day when they are forced to be accountable for everything that they have turned a “blind  eye” to. I shouldn’t have to explain why blatant actions have been and continue to be ignored. I shouldn’t have to explain how and why our, once thriving and beautifully diverse country has systematically been sent down the tubes. And is also being controlled by a Russian dictator who is training our orange, “want to be dictator” in the ways of murdering democracy.

My children shouldn’t have to witness and be explained the purpose of “Alligator Alcatraz.” And how funny it is to the hard core “Triple Trumpers” MAGA movement. The only thing consistent are lies, deceit and the many times of the crashing of Grindr by down low politicians. Who are angry because they are scared of authenticity. I shouldn’t have to explain why our country is ok with standing by someone like Benjamin Netanyahu and watching as the genocide in Gaza continues. I shouldn’t have to explain why Vladamir Putin is allowed to continue with the horrific attacks on the people of Ukraine. I shouldn’t have to explain why a dictator across the pond poisons those that don’t agree with them. But here we are.

What I do have to explain are the constant sacrifices of our military service members, who many have laid down their lives for generations, in an effort to make sure that we retain those inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And how and why the Declaration of Independence and our Constitution was formed. Even though the president of our country clearly knows nothing about said rights which was caught on camera many times. Why “No Kings Day” protests are so important. And how our once love for the “freedom of speech” is being allowed to now be censored.

With tears in my eyes, again, I write this. And the grief of my soul as I watch the sometimes-comical players in this mockery of a democratic government, keeps me up at night. And a lot of times, I laugh to keep from crying. But the videos of children and adults being starved to death is not something that we are accustomed to witnessing. I don’t believe that those who take away the rights of others should have rights of their own.

The tensions in this country of the blatant abuse of power by turning the military on our citizens is uncalled for and scary. And the depths of these fears, I do my best to shield my children from seeing. But they are not dumb. They ask questions and I try to explain them on an age-appropriate level.

I enjoy watching and posting the satire of some of these views. But make no mistake, I will constantly keep at the forefront of our conversations about the importance of such figures in the civil rights movement,  Nazi Germany, the extermination of the Jews in concentration camps and the importance of the Stonewall riots. And now, I must explain to them modern day concentration camps disguised as being something “good” for the American public.

People, life as we knew it is disappearing at a rapid rate. It is time for us as Americans to grow a spine and make a peaceful stand against tyranny. And this means doing “your part” in whatever way that looks. No longer is it ok to remain “neutral” as “neutrality” is now a vote for tyranny. You can make a choice to be red, blue or any color of the rainbow. And remember that staying neutral is also a choice. Our country is a collection of diverse groups of people, races, ethnicities, and religions creating One America. The colors that matter the most are the ones who are red, white, and blue.

Thanks for reading! And I hope that you, not only as an American, will stand up for what’s right instead of staying silent to what’s wrong. To our allies across the pond and abroad, your voices also matter. And I personally thank each and every one of you for not allowing the Epstein scandal to  go unnoticed. Keep standing for freedom my fellow Americans as will I. And to our diligent immigrants, I will continue to do my part to fight for your right to live the American Dream that most of us took for granted. Thanks for your attention to this matter.

Affirmation: I embrace the opportunities and freedoms in the United States to build the life I deserve.
