The Night My Cats Tried to Out Haunt the Haunted

“My cats didn’t find a single ghost. But they did uncover a level of chaos that would make a demon file a noise complaint.”

-This Puzzled Life

Light the charcoal. Sprinkle the sage. Negative energy go away. When my cats announced they were going on a mobile paranormal investigation, I should’ve known we were headed straight into foolishness. My cats decided to investigate the most haunted Waffle House in the Deep South.

These three rolled up to the haunted location like they were the Ghostbusters, the deacons, and the health inspector all at once. Except with more fur, more attitude, and absolutely zero qualifications. If the spirits weren’t restless before, they sure are now. There are haunted houses. There are haunted forests. There are haunted cemeteries. And then there is the Waffle House on The Evelyn Gandy Parkway, which has seen more spiritual warfare, questionable decisions, and late‑night confessions than any cemetery ever could. So naturally, the FCCOA (Feline Chaos Coalition of America) decided that was the perfect place for their next paranormal investigation. I should’ve known something was wrong when Piper put on her tutu and said, “We’re going somewhere with energy.”

PIPER: Lead Investigator, Chaos Medium, Waffle House Prophet

Piper strutted into that Waffle House like she was the CEO of breakfast food and spiritual disruption. She hopped onto a booth seat. Raised her paw and declared, “The spirits are active.” What she actually sensed was a waffle iron that’s been screaming since 1998. But she was committed. She marched across the restaurant shouting, “The veil is thin,” “The hash browns are calling to me,” “This place needs a cleansing and a mop” Honestly, she wasn’t wrong about the mop.

TINKERBELL: Paranormal Analyst, Waffle House Safety Inspector

Tinkerbell followed behind her with a clipboard she absolutely stole from the hostess stand. Her notes included “Unexplained sizzling noise (grill or demon).” “Suspicious syrup puddle.” “Piper is being dramatic again.” And “this building is held together by prayer and grease.” She tapped her pen like she was preparing to shut the place down for spiritual violations.

COCO: Snack Bait, Spirit Negotiator, Hash Brown Enthusiast

Coco waddled in carrying a bag of Temptations like she was bringing a casserole to a potluck. “I’m not saying I’m bait,” she said. “But if a ghost wants to share hash browns, I’m open to fellowship.” She then tried to eat a pat of butter straight off the table. Tinkerbell wrote “biohazard” on her clipboard.

The cats spread out like they were conducting a full‑scale exorcism of the breakfast menu.

Piper: “The spirit is in this corner.”

Tinkerbell: “Based on what evidence?”

Piper: “My whiskers tingled.”

Coco: “My whiskers tingle when I think about bacon.”

Piper pointed dramatically at the jukebox. The one that randomly plays “Sweet Home Alabama” at 3 a.m. even when it’s unplugged.

Piper: “The ghost lives in this machine.”

Tinkerbell: “That’s just Alabama energy.”

Coco: “Ask it if it takes song requests.”

Piper leapt onto the jukebox like she was rebuking demons. The jukebox responded by playing a single, tragic note. Piper screamed. Tinkerbell wrote “haunted” in all caps. And Coco asked if the ghost accepted snack donations.

Piper set my phone to record.

Piper: “If there is a spirit here, give us a sign.”

Waffle iron: SCREEEEEEEEECH

Piper: “The spirit has spoken.”

Coco: “Ask it if it likes hash browns.”

Tinkerbell: “Ask it to identify itself.”

Piper: “Ask it if it knows Jesus.”

The recording later revealed Piper breathing like she’s preaching a revival. Coco crunching. Tinkerbell sighing like a choir director with tone deaf altos. A waffle iron screaming for help. And me saying, “Why are y’all in a Waffle House at midnight?”

Just when they were about to wrap up, a shadow moved across the restaurant.

Piper: “The spirit approaches.”

Tinkerbell: “Everyone remain calm.”

Coco: “Tell the hash browns I love them.”

The figure stepped into the light. It was the night shift cook. He looked at the cats. The cats looked at him. He sighed like a man who has seen everything and fears nothing.

Cook: “Y’all investigating ghosts or ordering food?”

Piper: “We’re working.”

 Tinkerbell: “Official business.”

Coco: “Do you have snacks?”

He shrugged and went back to flipping waffles like nothing happened.

THE OFFICIAL FCCOA PARANORMAL REPORT

Filed by Tinkerbell, who takes her job too seriously:

  • No ghosts found.
  • One jukebox cursed.
  • Coco ate a butter packet.
  • Piper wants to investigate the freezer next time.
  • Tinkerbell says absolutely not.
  • The cook is unfazed.

After this investigation, even the waffle iron needs therapy. My cats have successfully scared away every spirit in that Waffle House. Not through bravery, but through sheer, unfiltered foolishness. Piper is still preaching. Tinkerbell is still judging. Coco is still eating. And the night‑shift cook is still telling people, “I seen some things last night.”

And after watching my cats terrorize yet another haunted location with the confidence of creatures who have never paid a bill, I need every cleansing ritual known to humankind. Piper is ready to file a spiritual lawsuit. Tinkerbell is drafting a report no ghost will ever read. And Coco is still trying to negotiate snacks with the afterlife. If any spirits were lingering, they’ve relocated to a quieter haunting. Like maybe a swamp, a cornfield, or literally anywhere my cats are not. Thanks for reading! Happy Halloween.

Affirmation:  “I am steady, I am centered, and I will not let three overconfident cats convince me that every flickering light is a portal to the beyond.”
