When the Strain Is Stronger Than the Anxiety Spiral: 2026’s Guide to Calm

“Peace isn’t passive. It’s chosen. Rolled. Lit. And inhaled with intention.”

-This Puzzled Life

Light the charcoal. Sprinkle the sage. Today we’re cleansing the air, the mood, and the nervous system with 2026’s top strains for anxiety. Plus, the classic OGs that have been calming folks since back when we all thought Myspace was forever. Welcome to my 2026 Anxiety-Friendly Strain Forecast. Where we honor Southern chaos, generational nerves, and the sacred art of choosing weed that won’t have your heart beating like it’s trying to escape your chest.

(Lemonchello 10 × LPC75 (London Pound Cake #75)

Floral, smooth, and steady. Like someone finally turned the volume down on your thoughts.

Cadillac Rainbow

(Pure Michigan × Runtz)

Don’t let the name fool you. This hybrid is calming and grounded. And it melts tension like butter on a hot biscuit.

Snow Caps

(Snow White × Haze)

Cool, crisp, and mentally refreshing. When anxiety tries to act up, Snow Caps says, “Not today.”

Gumbo

(Gummo × Guru (reported by Swamp Boys Seeds)

CLASSIC STRAINS FOR ANXIETY

These are the legends, the elders, and the strains that raised us.

Granddaddy Purple

(Purple Urkle × Big Bud)

A weighted blanket in plant form. Perfect for nighttime nerves and overthinking.

Blue Dream

(Blueberry × Haze)

The universal crowd-pleaser. Smooth, uplifting, and dependable. It’s like the friend who always brings snacks.

Northern Lights

(Afghani Landrace Indica × Thai Landrace (Sativa influence)

A classic indica that shuts down spiraling thoughts like flipping a breaker switch.

White Widow

(Brazilian Sativa Landrace × South Indian Indica)

Balanced and steady. Great for daytime anxiety when you still need to be a functional adult.

Harlequin (CBD-heavy)

(Colombian Gold × Thai Landrace × Swiss Landrace)

This one is for the folks who want calm without the THC rollercoaster. Gentle, soothing, and reliable.

Experts across 2025–2026 keep repeating the same gospel about these strains. They have moderate THC. They have CBD or balanced THC:CBD ratios. And calming terpenes like linalool, myrcene, and beta-caryophyllene. If the strain sounds like it belongs at a rave, don’t smoke it before a dentist appointment.

Anxiety is dramatic. Give it the wrong sativa and it will start narrating your doom like it’s auditioning for a true-crime documentary. You’ve spent enough years letting your nervous system run around like a toddler with a Capri Sun. Enough nights lying awake replaying conversations from 2008. Enough mornings waking up already bracing for imaginary disasters.

Give it the right hybrid, though, and suddenly your brain is like, “Maybe we can go to Walmart today.” Let your anxiety know, “I’m choosing peace today. And the strain that helps me keep it. It says,  “Sit down. Mama’s medicating.” Choosing the right strain for anxiety isn’t just self‑care. It’s a whole ritual, a boundary, a declaration that your peace is no longer up for negotiation. Not in this house. Not with these herbs. Not with these ancestors watching.

This year, we’re choosing strains that soften the edges. Quiet the spirals. And remind your brain that it is, in fact, allowed to unclench. We’re choosing hybrids that don’t betray you. Classics that never stopped loving you. Terpenes that understand the assignment. We’re choosing calm on purpose.

Anxiety may be loud, but you? You are louder. You are older, wiser, and fully prepared to sage-smoke-pray-meditate your way into a softer season. Your peace is not fragile. Your calm is not accidental. Your healing is not a rumor. It’s a lifestyle. And every time you pick a strain that supports your spirit instead of sabotaging it, you’re telling the universe, “I choose me. I choose quiet. I choose ease. And I’ll be damned if anxiety gets the last word.”

Now gather your rolling tray, your lighter, your intention, and your boundaries. Take a breath so deep your ancestors nod in approval. And then with all the authority of a Southern auntie who has lived through some things. Let that anxiety know, “I’m calm on purpose. I’m peaceful by design. And I’m medicating accordingly. Now hush.” Stage cleared. Peace secured. Thanks for reading! Keep blazin.’

Affirmation: I honor my calm like a sacred ritual. I choose what soothes me. Supports me. And keeps my spirit steady. Anxiety does not run this house. I do.

Anxiety Awareness: The Day My Nervous System Tried to File an HR Complaint Against Walmart

“Anxiety tried to schedule a meeting with me today, but I declined because I was already overbooked with minding my business and avoiding Walmart.”

-This Puzzled Life

Light the charcoal. Sprinkle the sage. Today we are not just cleansing the room. We are cleansing the entire nervous system that has been acting like a raccoon on Red Bull since 1986. If we’re going to talk about anxiety awareness, we might as well sanctify the whole atmosphere before my nervous system starts acting like it’s auditioning for The Exorcist: Southern Edition. Also, somebody please hold my sweet tea. And hide my debit card. Because my anxiety just whispered, “Let’s go to Walmart.” That is how generational trauma gets activated. And it just tried to file a noise complaint against my own heartbeat.

Let me tell you something. Anxiety is the only condition that will have you sitting in your own house. And minding your own business when suddenly your brain goes, “Hey, remember that embarrassing thing you did in 4th grade?” And now you’re sweating like you’re on trial for a crime you didn’t commit but might have thought about once.

Anxiety is a full-time employee in my life. No PTO. No sick days. No boundaries. It clocks in before I wake up and clocks out after I fall asleep. Sometimes it leaves sticky notes on my dreams like, “We need to talk.” And don’t get me started on the physical symptoms. Anxiety will have you convinced you’re dying because your left eyebrow twitched. Meanwhile your ancestors are watching from the spirit realm like, “Baby, that’s just dehydration and poor life consequences.”

And the worst part? Anxiety loves to show up at the most inconvenient times. Like a Southern auntie who pops up unannounced but brings no food. You ever try to relax? Just sit down. Breathe. And maybe watch a little TV? Anxiety busts through the door like, “Oh you thought. Let’s review every possible failure you’ve ever had.”

But here’s the thing. Awareness doesn’t mean we’re broken. It means we’re paying attention. It means we’re learning the choreography of our own nervous system. Even if the choreography looks like a baby deer on ice. It means we’re naming the thing so it can’t sneak up on us like a possum in the trash can at 2 a.m. And it means we’re not alone. Not in Mississippi. Not in the South. Not in this chaotic, holy, hilarious human experience.

But the real comedy? The way anxiety tries to prepare you for every possible scenario like a doomsday prepper with a Pinterest board. It is the only condition that will have you standing in the cereal aisle. Staring at 47 versions of Cheerios. And sweating like you’re defusing a bomb. Meanwhile your brain is like.

  • “What if you pick the wrong cereal?”
  • “What if everyone is watching you pick the wrong cereal?”
  • “What if you pass out in front of the cereal and become a local Facebook post?”
  • Going to the grocery store? “What if you forget how to walk?”
  • Sending an email? “What if you accidentally confess to a felony?”
  • Meeting new people? “What if they can hear your thoughts and your thoughts are stupid?”

And that’s exactly when my cats, my emotional support staff and furry chaos consultants, decide to hold a household emergency meeting.

Piper (dramatic and convinced she’s the CEO): “Alright team, Mama’s going to Walmart. That’s a Code Orange. Everyone stay sharp.”

Tinkerbell (the eldest acting, the union rep, wearing imaginary glasses): “Should we call the therapist now or wait until she hits the checkout line and forgets her PIN again?”

Coco (the chaotic neutral gremlin): “I say we call the therapist the moment she steps into the parking lot. Walmart energy is unpredictable. Anything can happen. A rollback could roll back her entire sense of stability.”

Piper: “Coco, we can’t call the therapist every time Mama goes to Walmart.”

Coco: “Why not? She said to reach out when things feel overwhelming. Walmart is overwhelming. The lighting alone is a threat.”

Tinkerbell: “Plus, Mama always ends up in that aisle with the seasonal décor. And that’s when she starts questioning her entire life path. That’s textbook panic adjacent.”

Piper: “Okay, fine. But we need a plan. If Mama starts breathing like she’s running from a ghost, we call the therapist. If she starts sweating like she’s in a revival tent, we call the therapist. If she starts talking to herself-”

Coco: “Piper, she talks to herself every day.”

Piper: “Right. So, if she starts talking to herself louder than usual.”

Tinkerbell: “And if she buys anything from the middle aisle that she didn’t come for. That’s a red flag.”

Coco: “Like the time she went for milk and came home with a new bong?”

Piper: “Exactly. That was a cry for help.”

Tinkerbell: “Okay, so we’re agreed. Our therapist is on standby. Paws on deck. And if Mama ends up in the candle aisle sniffing things like she’s trying to inhale peace directly into her bloodstream, we intervene.”

Coco: “I’ll bring the emotional support snacks.”

Piper: “I’ll bring the drama.”

Tinkerbell: “I’ll bring the clipboard.”

And let the record show, anxiety may roll up on us like a tornado siren at 3 a.m. But we are not facing it alone. Not in this house. Not in this lifetime. Not with three cats who treat mental health like a full‑time group project.

Anxiety awareness isn’t about pretending we’re calm. It’s about knowing the signs. Naming the chaos. And having a furry emergency response team ready to call the therapist before you even realize you’re spiraling.

It’s about honoring the truth that Walmart is a battlefield. The fluorescent lights are the enemy. And the seasonal aisle is a spiritual test. It’s about laughing at the absurdity of it all. Not because it’s small, but because we’re bigger. And it’s about remembering this. You can have anxiety. You can have panic attacks. You can have days where your brain feels like a raccoon in a Dollar General dumpster. But you also have resilience. You have humor. You have sage, charcoal, and a whole household of four‑legged emotional support supervisors who refuse to let you fall apart alone.

So let anxiety know loudly, proudly, with your whole Southern chest, “I may panic in Walmart. But I do not panic alone. I come with a team. I come with a plan. And I come with three cats who will call my therapist before my knees even start to wobble. Anxiety dismissed with Southern hospitality and a side‑eye. Thanks for reading! And reach out when needed.

Affirmation: I am calm. Collected. And spiritually moisturized. And if my anxiety disagrees, it can take a number and wait behind the cats, the ancestors, and my iced coffee.

Mental Health Awareness Month: A Southern Survival Guide for an Unwell Nation

“My mental health is held together by therapy, hydration, and three cats who refuse to let me spiral in peace.”

-This Puzzled Life

Light the charcoal. It’s Mental Health Awareness Month. And the collective mental state of this country is giving ‘a church van with three bald tires and a prayer.” The nation’s mental health is hanging on by a thread, a prayer, and a prescription refill reminder.

And let’s be honest. This crisis didn’t start at the bottom. No ma’am. We’ve got a mental‑health crisis starting at the top. And it’s dripping like a busted AC unit in August. Our leadership is acting like a Facebook comment section that’s surrounded by red‑hat followers cheering like it’s a halftime show. They treat conspiracy theories like gospel. And emotional regulation as a foreign language.

Meanwhile, my cats have entered the chat. Nothing says “mental health check‑in” like three judgmental felines watching the country unravel while demanding snacks. My cats have already staged an intervention.

Piper lit the sage herself. Coco is pacing like she’s waiting on election results. And Tinkerbell is under the couch. Because she said the national energy feels “crunchy.” She sits like a therapist who’s out of network. And blinking slowly at the news like, “This is why y’all need boundaries.” She watches the red‑hat crowd on TV and immediately starts grooming herself. Because she knows you can’t let that kind of energy stick to your fur.

Coco has diagnosed the nation with “Too Much Foolishness Disorder.” Her treatment plan includes knocking pens off the table. Screaming at 3 a.m. And sitting directly on your chest until you confront your feelings. She sees the state of the country and says, “Oh, we’re all unwell? Bet.” Then she sprints down the hallway like she’s reenacting the national mood.

Piper is the emotional support animal who needs emotional support. She watches the president on TV. Tilts her head and walks away like, “I don’t know what that is. But it’s not stable.” Then she curls up in your lap. Even she knows the collective anxiety is loud.

In May, we gather as a nation to say, “Let’s take care of our minds.” And every May the nation responds, “Absolutely. Right after I argue with strangers online about things I don’t understand.” Therapists are tired. Teachers are tired. Nurses are tired. Your cats are tired. You are tired. The ancestors are tired. Even the houseplants are like, “Girl, water me and breathe.”

Down Here in the South we’re doing our best. We’re lighting candles. We’re praying. We’re drinking water. We’re trying to heal generational trauma. While also trying to find the good scissors.

The collective Southern mental state is basically, “I’m fine.” Translation is that I have cried in the laundry room twice today. And if one more person asks me what’s for dinner, I’m moving into the woods.” Piper nods. Coco screams. Tinkerbell knocks something off the counter. It’s a family effort.

What do we do? We breathe. We hydrate. We take our meds. We go to therapy. We stop arguing with people who think facts are optional. We light the charcoal and let the sage smoke carry away the foolishness. And we listen to the cats. They’ve been trying to tell us, “Rest is resistance. Snacks are medicine. Boundaries are holy.”If we’re going to survive this era with its chaos, noise, and its red‑hat circus energy, we’re going to need hydration, humor, therapy, and at least one cat supervising our coping mechanisms. This country needs therapy, hydration, and a nap that lasts until at least 2028.

Piper has officially closed her laptop and declared she’s unavailable for further foolishness. And has already clocked out and put her paw over the “Do Not Disturb” sign. Coco is stress eating treats like she’s watching a season finale. And she is filing paperwork with HR titled “The Nation Is Acting Up Again.” Tinkerbell has curled up on my chest because she said, “the nation’s anxiety is too loud and she’s clocking out.” And has declared the vibes unconstitutional and gone to bed.

If the world insists on acting unwell, then we’ll heal anyway. Loudly, joyfully, and with three cats as our emotional support security detail. Bless your boundaries, your brain cells, and your blood pressure. Now go forth and protect your peace like it’s the last biscuit at Sunday dinner. Thanks for reading! Get your ass in therapy.

Affirmation: I honor my mind, protect my peace, and set boundaries so firm even Coco won’t cross them.

Budtender Moment: Alcapulco Gold Strain Review

“My favorite exercise is walking… to the fridge.”

-Unknown

Light the charcoal. Sprinkle the sage. Negative energy go away. Today, I want to tell you about another strain that has been around for ever and ever, Amen. The name is Acapulco Gold.

Acapulco Gold is another sativa-dominant landrace strain. It’s roots trace it back to Acapulco, Mexico on the Mexican coast. And has been traced by to the 60s and 70s when this strain was dominating in cannabis categories. The flavoring notes the flavors of sweet, earthy, and spicy, burnt toffee or caramel, and sometimes citrus or pine depending on the phenotype. And that is what I experienced with the strain that I used. It almost has a patchouli feel in this strain. But the citrus is definitely the dominant flavoring in the strain that I tried.

Top terpenes in this strain are Myrcene, Caryophyllene, Limonene, and Pinene. Patients report relief from depression, stress, chronic fatigue, chronic pain, and insomnia. What I noticed quickly is how much better a mood that I was in. It absolutely turned that frown right side up. Please keep in mind that each grow will be different and the flower’s effects will differ depending on which region of the country that the plant is grown. Thanks for reading! Keep blazin.’

Affirmation: I consume with awareness, gratitude, and respect.

Letter to My Addiction: The Predator I Mistook for Shelter

“The moment I admitted you could kill me was the moment I finally chose to live.”

-This Puzzled Life

Light the charcoal. Let the first curl of smoke rise like a confession I’ve been swallowing for years. The kind that sits heavy in the chest because it’s finally time to stop pretending. This is me standing in the doorway of my own truth. Trembling but present. And ready to speak to the thing that once felt like comfort. You didn’t come into my life with claws out. You came soft. Familiar. You came disguised as relief, comfort, and as the one thing that could quiet the noise in my chest. Then you became a companion. I didn’t know you were studying me. Learning my wounds. Memorizing my weak spots. And waiting for the moment I’d confuse your hunger for affection.

And now you reveal yourself as the slow, patient danger I keep calling love. I can feel the ache of it. The grief of it. And the terrifying clarity that comes when you finally admit the thing you’ve been running from is the same predator that’s been hollowing me out from the inside. And today, with this smoke rising around me, I’m done whispering. I’m done softening the truth. I’m done pretending I don’t know what you are.

I’ve finally stopped running from the truth. And it hits me with a force that steals the air from my lungs. I keep letting you lead. And you won’t just ruin my life. You will end it. Not in some dramatic, cinematic way. But in the quiet, methodical way predators always finish their work. You’ll take my breath one day. And the world will keep spinning. The people who love me will stand in the wreckage wondering how something I once trusted became the thing that swallowed me whole.

That realization sits in my bones like a cold prophecy. I can feel how close the edge is. I can feel how thin the line has become. I can feel the way my body is starting to whisper warnings I used to ignore. And for the first time, I’m not pretending I’m stronger than you. I’m not pretending I can dance with you forever. I’m not pretending this ends any other way. The truth is simple and terrifying. I will die.

I let you close. Closer than anyone else. I let you wrap around me like safety. Like something I could trust. And for a long time, I believed you were saving me from the world, myself, and the ache I didn’t know how to carry. But predators don’t save. They circle. They stalk. They wait. And I see you for what you are.

You’ve been feeding on me piece by piece. Slow enough that I could pretend it wasn’t happening. And gentle enough that I could call it love. You made me believe I needed you to breathe, function, and to exist. You made me forget what life felt like before you sank your teeth in. But I’m not blind anymore. I can feel the way you’re hollowing me out. I can feel the way you’re tightening your grip. I can feel the truth I’ve been terrified to say, “My days are numbered.”

Not dramatically. Not suddenly. You’ll do it the way you’ve always done everything with patience and precision. With that quiet, familiar whisper that tells me I can’t live without you. Because loving you has become a slow death. And I’m finally admitting that the thing I thought was protecting me is the same thing dragging me under. You are the predator. I am the prey. And you will finish what you started. I’m done mistaking your teeth for tenderness. I’m done calling this love. Because when you take my life, it will be the last thing you’ll ever take from me. Please just make it quick.

Saying that out loud breaks something open in me. It’s not just fear. It’s grief for the version of me who thought I could love a predator into gentleness. Grief for the girl who thought she was in control. Grief for the woman who kept choosing you even as you carved pieces out of her.

But there’s something else under the grief. And this is where I stop lying to myself about what you are. This is where I look you in the eye and speak the truth you never wanted me to understand. I see the death you’re leading me toward. And, yet, I still can’t break free. Thanks for reading! And turn back before it’s too late.

Affirmation: I honor the truth of where I am.

What Are Cannabinoids?

“I’m high on life. Oh, wait, sorry, that’s just marijuana.”

-Unknown

Light the charcoal. Sprinkle the sage. Negative energy go away. Today, I want to talk to you about cannabinoids. And with terpenes this medicine is saving lives.

What are cannabinoids? They are a group of chemical compounds found primarily in the Cannabis sativa plant. And the plant contains about 540 chemical substances. They interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which regulates various functions that include mood, appetite, pain, and sleep. And there are also different types of cannabinoids (https://www.nccih.nih.gov, 2025).

Types of Cannabinoids

·        Phytocannabinoids: Naturally found in the cannabis plant such as THC and CBD

·        Endocannabinoids: Cannabino9ids produced by the human body, as anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG).

·        Synthetic cannabinoids: Man-made cannabinoids designed to mimic the effects of phytocannabinoids such as “K2” and “Spice” (https://nida.nih.gov, 2025).

What are specific phytocannabinoids and their functions?

·        Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC): psychoactive compound that produces euphoric “high:. It also helps with nausea, pain, and appetite stimulation.

·        Cannabidiol (CBD): Non-psychoactive compound known for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) properties.

·        Cannabigerol (CBG): Known as the “mother of all cannabinoids” because others are synthesized from its acidic form CBGA. It is non-psychoactive and is being researched for potential neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial effects.

·        Cannabinol (CBN):  A minor cannabinoid that forms as THC ages and degrades. It is mildly intoxicating but primarily known for its sedative properties and p[potential use as a sleep aid. I can tell you that I search for strains high in CBN for severe insomnia. The strain that almost instantly puts me to sleep is Purple Cheisel.

·        Cannabichromene (CBC): A non-psychoactive cannabinoid that’s being studied for its potential effects on pain and inflammation. This one will definitely help with chronic pain.

·        Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid (THCA): The non-psychoactive precursor to THC, found in raw cannabis. When heated it converts to THC. It has potential anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties.

·        Cannabidolic Acid (CBDA): The raw, unheated precursor to CBD, found in fresh cannabis. When heated it converts to CBD. It may have stronger anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea effects than CBD in its raw form.

·        Delta-8 THC: A psychoactive compound similar to THC, though its effects are less potent. It occurs in small quantities in the cannabis plant but can be synthetically produced from CBD (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, 2023). I don’t personally have a problem with the idea of delta-8 and delta-9 products. What I do have a problem with is the fact that they are not regulated and are sold in gas stations to people making them sick. Those products are not safe at all. Because we don’t know what all is in them.

The topic of cannabinoids has a lot of information available. And I won’t bore you with all the very distinct information. As I have said about terpenes, get to know your cannabinoids. It’s imperative when seeking to fine tune your cannabis regimen. Thanks for reading! And keep blazin.’

Affirmation: My mind, body and spirit are my top priority. Cannabis aids with each.

What Are Terpenes?

“Terpenes can enhance the effects of cannabinoids when combined or take with them.”

-Montana Department of Revenue

Light the charcoal. Sprinkle the sage. Negative energy, go away. Today, I want to talk to you about terpenes. I am going to do my best to break it down in the easiest way possible.

In plants, terpenes are a natural defense against herbivores and pests. They also play a part in the attraction of beneficial organisms ensuring plant survival and reproduction. Some terpenes protect the plants from environmental stressors like heat and UV radiation. They also function as signaling defense mechanisms (www.nature.com, 2025).

Terpenes are organic compounds responsible for the aromas and flavors of cannabis strains and other plants. And cannabis has over 150 identified terpenes in the plant. However, many exist in such low concentrations that  there may not significantly contribute.

Beyond aromatic qualities terpenes are also studied for therapeutic benefits like pain relief, anti-inflammatory, and anti-anxiety effects, among others. The factors that influence terpene profiles are genetics, growing conditions and the plant’s developmental  stage. Here are a few terpenes and explanations.

§  Myrcene: known for earthy flavors and associated with  pain relief and relaxation. This is one of the main terpenes that I look for in my medicine. It is a  big one that helps with chronic pain.

§  Caryophyllene: has the “pepper like” flavor that also helps with pain relief.

§  Limonene: responsible for the citrusy aroma. And helps with mood elevation.

§  Pinene: correct! This one is responsible for the pine scent which can also help to elevate mood. I will tell you that most of the negative anxiety experiences that I have with cannabis is due to this “panic attack provoker.” And that is why I tend to enjoy hybrids.

§  Linalool: responsible for flora aromas and relaxation. Helps with the ability to combat stress and ease body aches, reduce muscle spasms, relieve pain, and anxiety.

§  Humulene: is used for inflammation and weight control. And helps to tame those terrible munchies.

§  Terpinolene: has been shown to help inhibit tumor growth and have positive effects on cardiovascular disease (www.cannaflower.com, 2021).

Terpenes and other medical benefits:

§  Aromatherapy and Flavoring: Terpenes are used in essential oil, perfumes, and food.

§  Potential Therapeutic Effects: Research indicates potential health benefits include:

o   Anti-inflammatory: Helps with chronic inflammation

o   Analgesic: pain relief

o   Anti-anxiety and antidepressant:they promote calming effects and improve mood. Linalool is found in lavender.

o   Antioxidant: Protects cells against damage

o   Antimicrobial and antifungal combat bacterial and fungal infections

o   Sleep improvements: Terpenes like myrcene have sedating effect and promote relaxation.

o   Neuroprotective effects:Potentially help protect neurons from damage and degradation.

o   Cancer research: Early studies suggest potential anticancer properties (www.medicalnewstoday.com, 2025).

All these points describe how the terpenes in cannabis and other plants can be so helpful to us and to our ecosystem. I invite you to know the terpenes that work best for you even if you are not personally use cannabis. They are an essential part in healing and management of various debilitating conditions. Thanks for reading! And Know Your Terpenes!

Affirmation: I will allow myself to accept my pain today and embrace the things that relieve it.

Child Abuse Awareness: When the Safe Places Aren’t Safe

“When the places built to protect children become the places that break them, the wound isn’t just personal. It’s a failure of every adult who chose silence over responsibility.”

-This Puzzled Life

Light the candles. Move the breakables. Tell the ancestors to take their seats and pass the sweet tea. We’re not easing into this one. And before the denial committee calls an emergency meeting to rehearse their “But that’s not what we meant” speeches, let’s go ahead and say the quiet part out loud.

Child abuse doesn’t just happen in the home. It happens in classrooms where teachers misuse authority. In churches where “discipline” is weaponized. In sports programs where adults confuse control with coaching. In friend groups where older kids exploit younger ones. And in any space where a child’s safety depends on an adult’s integrity, and that integrity fails.

Let me say this in the clearest way I know how. And  coming from someone who personally knows a little something on this topic, what happened to you was abuse. And it was a betrayal of power. Schools and other places are supposed to be safe. Adults in those buildings are supposed to protect children. You were not protected. And when abuse happens in a place that claims to be safe, the damage hits on multiple layers at once. It’s not just the act itself. It’s the collapse of every structure that was supposed to shield you.

You were a child. They were adults. The responsibilities were never equal. The conflict you still feel between “their job” and “your role” is a direct result of their failure, not yours. The tactics you endured weren’t just harmful. They were calculated. “Diabolical” would be the right word. The cruelty, the gaslighting, the public humiliation? These are methods designed to break a person’s sense of reality and self‑worth. Many adults would crumble under that kind of psychological warfare. Expecting a child to withstand it is unthinkable. And, yet, if you’re reading this, you did. Not because you should have had to. Not because you were equipped for it. But because you had no choice. That’s not resilience by choice. That’s survival by necessity.

Here are a few sources you might want to dive into.

1. Most child abuse is never reported (all types)

U.S. Department of Justice – Bureau of Justice Statistics“86% of child abuse cases are never reported to authorities.” 🔗 https://bjs.ojp.gov/content/pub/pdf/cv22.pdf (bjs.ojp.gov in Bing) (See section on underreporting of violent crime against children.)

2. Children often disclose abuse but are ignored or silenced

Health & Social Care in the Community (2025) Study on child maltreatment disclosures found that children frequently disclose abuse (physical, emotional, sexual, neglect) but are ignored, dismissed, or punished by adults. 🔗 https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/hsc.14336(onlinelibrary.wiley.com in Bing)

3. Delayed disclosure is common across ALL abuse types

CHILD USA – National Think Tank for Child ProtectionOver 70% of victims delay disclosure for at least five years, regardless of abuse type. 🔗 https://childusa.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Delayed-Disclosure-Report.pdf(childusa.org in Bing)

4. Institutional betrayal: schools, churches, programs often ignore reports

Journal of Child Sexual Abuse (applies to institutional responses across all abuse types) Shows that institutions frequently dismiss, minimize, or cover up reports of abuse.🔗 https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/10538712.2019.1570402 (tandfonline.com in Bing)

Note: While this journal focuses on sexual abuse, the institutional‑betrayal patterns. It’s documents are identical across physical, emotional, and psychological abuse.

5. Teachers and school staff rarely report abuse, even when required by law

U.S. Department of Education Report Only 11% of school personnel who witness or suspect abuse report it. 🔗 https://www2.ed.gov/rschstat/research/pubs/misconductreview/report.pdf (www2.ed.gov in Bing)

6. Children who report abuse are often disbelieved or blamed

National Institute of Justice – Child Abuse Disclosure Research Children frequently disclose abuse but face denial, minimization, or retaliation from adults. 🔗 https://nij.ojp.gov/topics/articles/child-abuse-disclosure-what-research-tells-us (nij.ojp.gov in Bing)

The wound you carry makes sense. Trauma doesn’t fade just because time passes. It imprints itself. It becomes a landmark in the psyche. And  something you walk around, navigate, and learn to live beside. Therapy can help you understand it. But it can’t erase the fact that it happened. And that it shouldn’t have happened. The gaslighting you endured stole something fundamental. Your ability to trust your own perception.

When adults deny a child’s reality, the child learns to doubt themselves. When they shame a child publicly, the child learns their existence is a problem. When adults ignore a child’s cries for help, the child learns that safety is conditional or imaginary. That’s not a child “being dramatic.” That’s a child being abandoned. And then abandonment by the very people who were supposed to protect you happened. The people you trusted were identified as educators, authority figures,  and other adults in power. And that leaves a wound that is both emotional and existential. You were trapped. And that was not your fault.

A child cannot escape a system built around them. A child cannot “just tell someone” when the people they’re supposed to tell are the ones causing the harm or ignoring it. A child cannot “make better choices” when every direction is blocked. You survived in the only ways available to you. Your mind did what it had to do. Your body did what it had to do. Your spirit did what it had to do. Survival is not shameful. Survival is not weak. Survival is not something you owe anyone an explanation for.

And the fact of the matter is that THE FAILURE WAS THEIRS. NOT YOURS. You were a child. They were adults. They had power. You had none. The responsibility was theirs. The consequences were yours. And that imbalance is the injustice you’re naming. What you lived through would have broken many adults. The fact that you’re here speaking and naming it is refusing to let it stay buried. And that is strength. Even if it doesn’t feel like it. Thanks for reading! And do your part to help protect our children.

Affirmation: “I honor the child who survived what no child should face. I am not defined by what was done to me. I am defined by the courage it takes to speak it.”

You Can’t Pray the Gay Away, But You Sure Can Expose the Hypocrisy: A Southern Queer Survival Guide

“If your faith requires someone else to suffer, it’s not holy. It’s just dressed‑up cruelty.”

-This Puzzled Life

Light the charcoal. Apparently the courts woke up. Stretched. Sipped their Folgers and said, “Hmm. What if we brought back psychological torture today?” And the conservative Christians said, “YAY! Revival!” Meanwhile, every queer person in the South is standing on their porch like, “Lord, give me strength, patience, and a Xanax the size of a biscuit.”

Down here in Mississippi, we know hypocrisy like we know humidity. It clings. It suffocates. It ruins your hair and your spirit at the same time. And nothing brings out the hypocrisy quite like a ruling that says, “Sure, go ahead and traumatize queer people in the name of Jesus. He won’t mind.” These folks will tell you with a straight face that they’re doing this out of “love.” If that’s love, then I’m a straight man named Bubba who drives a lifted truck and says “bro” every six seconds.

Let’s be honest. This ruling isn’t about saving souls. It’s about controlling bodies. It’s about punishing difference. It’s about making queer people small enough to fit inside their narrow theology and even narrower worldview. And the wildest part? These are the same people who can’t keep their own households together. The same people who preach “traditional marriage” while living like a deleted storyline from a messy reality show. The same people who scream “protect the children!” While ignoring the actual dangers children face like abuse, exploitation, and the youth pastor who keeps volunteering for overnight trips.

But sure. Let’s focus on the gays. Because we’re clearly the problem. Not the pastors who keep getting “relocated.” Not the lawmakers who can’t keep their pants zipped. Not the “family values” influencers who spend more time in hotel rooms than in prayer.

Let me break it down in terms even a conservative uncle can understand. You cannot convert someone out of being gay. You cannot shame someone out of being gay. You cannot therapy someone out of being gay. You cannot “deliverance session” someone out of being gay. Unless the only thing you’re delivering is trauma.

If sexuality were a choice, don’t you think I would’ve chosen something easier? Something with less paperwork? Something that didn’t require me to explain myself at every family gathering like I’m giving a TED Talk in a Cracker Barrel? But no. God made me like this. Curved, colorful, and incapable of pretending otherwise.

You could dangle 45 sets of dangly bits in front of me like a clearance sale at Spencer’s Gifts and I still wouldn’t be straight. But put me in front of some boobs and a cooter cat and suddenly I’m glowing like a porch light in July. That’s not a choice. That’s not a phase. That’s not a “lifestyle.” That’s divine architecture.

If you want to stay in the closet because it feels safer, I get it. But don’t pretend it’s holiness. Don’t pretend it’s righteousness. Don’t pretend it’s “God’s plan.” It’s fear. And fear is the currency of conservative Christianity. I sprinted out of the closet like it was on fire. And I’ve been free ever since. Even with my own family members who weaponize scripture like it’s a Nerf gun filled with shame. I send that mess right back to sender with a smile and a boundary. Chosen family is where the love lives. Chosen family is where the truth lives. Chosen family is where the rainbow was always meant to shine.

Theo rainbow is divine reassurance. It’s God saying, “Relax. I made y’all fabulous on purpose.” No court ruling can change that. No pastor can change that. No conversion therapist with a clipboard and a superiority complex can change that. We are here. We are queer. We are not going anywhere. And we are not apologizing for existing.

So let the smoke rise like a prayer the evangelicals forgot to proofread. Stand tall in your queerness like a magnolia tree that refuses to bow to the storm. Because here’s the truth they don’t want to face. Every time they try to erase us. We multiply. Every time they try to shame us. We shine harder. Every time they try to legislate us out of existence. We become louder, brighter, and more unbothered than ever.

Their hypocrisy is loud. But our joy is louder. Their cruelty is sharp. But our resilience is sharper. Their fear is deep. But our love is deeper. And at the end of the day, when the court rulings fade. When the sermons lose their sting. When the shame campaigns collapse under their own weight. We will still be here laughing. Loving. Living. Thriving. Dancing in the rainbow God hung in the sky as a reminder that storms don’t last forever.

So let them clutch their pearls. Let them scream about “family values.” Let them pretend their closets don’t have motion‑activated lights. We know the truth. You damn sure cannot stop the rainbow from rising. Mic dropped. Floor cracked. Hypocrisy exposed. Amen and pass the sweet tea. Thanks for reading! And Happy Pride year-round. What are your thoughts on this type of ruling?

Affirmation: “My identity is divine. My joy is sacred. And no court, church, or closet can dim the rainbow God put in my soul.”

Dear World, Please Don’t Give Up on Us: A Love Letter From a Blue Dot in the Red Sea

“Hope isn’t blind. It’s stubborn. It keeps standing up even when the world keeps trying to knock it sideways.”

-A Blue Dot American Who Refuses to Sit Down

Light the charcoal. Sprinkle the sage. Tell the ancestors to clock in for overtime. Lord help us, y’all. The United States is going through it. And by “it,” I mean the kind of national meltdown that makes you look around and say, “Surely this is a deleted scene from a dystopian comedy that never made it to Netflix because the plot was too unrealistic.” Yet here we are. Living it. Breathing it. And trying not to scream into a pothole on I‑59.

To the rest of the world:

Please don’t give up on us. I promise you the majority of Americans are not standing behind the chaos, cruelty, or conspiracy‑soaked nonsense that has taken over our headlines. Most of us are exhausted, horrified, and Googling “how to apply for dual citizenship” at 2 a.m.while clutching a heating pad and a prayer. We see the instability. We see the authoritarian vibes. We see the white‑nationalist cosplay that keeps popping up like mold in a damp apartment. And we’re fighting it loudly, creatively, and with the kind of determination only a country built on protest can muster.

Yes, we know our leadership looks like a fever dream. Some people in power are making decisions that feel like they were written by a committee of raccoons who found a bottle of expired cough syrup. And our country is being run by a pube signature. Some are facing public scrutiny over their past associations. They include the widely reported connections between political figures and Jeffrey Epstein’s social circle. And the public has every right to demand transparency, accountability, and the full truth. People across the political spectrum have been calling for the release of all relevant documents. Because sunlight is still the best disinfectant. Meanwhile, the rest of us are over here like, “Hey world, please don’t judge us by the loudest people in the room. We’re trying to get the remote back from the uncle who keeps changing the channel to chaos.”

To our allies abroad:

We still see you as family. We still believe in cooperation, democracy, and global peace. We still want to stand shoulder‑to‑shoulder with you. And not stomp around the world stage like a toddler who missed naptime. Please keep talking to your governments about ways to support democracy here. Not because we’re helpless. But because democracy is a team sport. And right now, our team captain keeps wandering off the field.

About the weaponized religion situation. Listen. I grew up in the Deep South. I know about Jesus. I know his work. I know his vibe. And I can tell you with full confidence that Jesus would be flipping tables so fast in Mississippi right now that he’d qualify for CrossFit. The loudest “Christian” voices down here aren’t preaching love, compassion, or justice. They’re preaching fear, control, and purity culture. Which is ironic considering how many of their own scandals keep popping up like whack‑a‑moles at the county fair.

Not all Christians are like this. Some are kind, loving, justice‑oriented people who actually read the parts of the Bible about caring for the oppressed. But in Mississippi I can count those folks on one hand and still have fingers left to hold my sweet tea.

And for the record. I embrace all religions. All ethnicities. All genders. All sexual orientations. All cultures. Except the ones built on cruelty, control, or harming children. If you come to this country with love in your heart and respect for human dignity, you’re welcome at my table. I’ll even make you cornbread.

If you are brown, seeking asylum, fleeing violence, or simply trying to give your babies a better life. You are welcome in the America I believe in. The real America. The one with a heartbeat. The one that remembers its own immigrant roots even when our politicians pretend they sprouted straight out of the soil like turnips.

The America I love has always been a patchwork quilt of cultures, languages, and stories. And it has been stitched together by people who crossed oceans, deserts, and borders because hope was louder than fear. That America still exists. It’s bruised, tired, and currently being held hostage by people who think compassion is a weakness. But it’s still here. And it’s not going anywhere.

We just have to clean our governing house first. And Lord when I say “clean,” I don’t mean a light dusting. I mean roll up your sleeves. Put on the yellow gloves. And open every window because something in here died in 1987. And nobody ever dealt with it. The corruption runs deep. Deep like “you’re gonna need a shovel, a headlamp, and maybe a priest” deep. We’re not afraid of hard work. We built this country on hard work. We can rebuild it the same way.

And let me say this plainly. Donald Trump does not speak for us. Not for the majority. Not for the heart of this country. Not for the people who still believe in democracy, dignity, and basic human decency. Millions of Americans across races, religions, genders, and backgrounds are fighting every single day to protect what’s left of our democratic institutions. They’re marching, voting, organizing, educating, and refusing to be bullied into silence. We’re not giving up. We’re not backing down. We’re not letting authoritarianism take root in the soil our ancestors bled to cultivate.

The heart of the United States will return. I believe that with everything in me. Not because things look good. Because they don’t. Not because the path is easy. Because it isn’t. But because the soul of this country has always been bigger than the people trying to tear it apart. We’ve survived wars, depressions, pandemics, corruption, and more than one leader who thought the Constitution was optional reading. We’ll survive this too. The real America is the one built on courage, diversity, and stubborn hope. And it is still here. Still fighting. Still glowing like a blue dot in a sea of red hats. Thanks for reading! And Fuck Donald Trump, ICE, and MAGA.

Affirmation: I glow in the dark. I stand in the storm. And I refuse to let chaos speak louder than my courage. My voice, my vote, and my hope are stronger than any tyrant’s tantrum.
