Apparently Everything Is Communism Now

“When misinformation rises, let your ancestors steady your spirit and your sass sharpen your truth.”

-This Puzzled Life

Light the charcoal. Let it crackle like your last nerve at Thanksgiving when Uncle Red-Hat started yelling about “Socialism Turning Us Into Communists!” Sprinkle the sage. Invoke the ancestors especially Big Mama, who survived segregation, three husbands, and that one church lady who kept stealing her potato salad recipe. Today, we are gather in the sacred, smoky glow of your living room m. To address the aggravation, frustration, and the spiritual constipation caused by folks who insist that socialism → democratic socialism → communism → gulags → the end of biscuits and freedom. The ancestors are already pacing. PawPaw whispered, “Lord give me strength.” And reached for his flask. And your great-aunt is clutching her pearls so hard they might turn into diamonds.

Let’s talk about the red-hat choir who believes any government program that doesn’t involve tax breaks for billionaires is “communism.” These are the same folks who cash Social Security checks. Use Medicare. Drive on publicly funded roads. Send their kids to public schools. And call the fire department when Earl deep-fries a turkey indoors. But the moment someone says, “Hey, maybe people shouldn’t die because they can’t afford insulin,” suddenly it’s, “Communism, Martha! Grab The Bible And The Bug-Out Bag!”

Pumpkin spice patriot, communism is not hiding behind your Kroger pharmacy waiting to jump out and seize your property. The ancestors are tired. Our spirit guides are tired. And even our pets are tired. It is emotionally exhausting watching people scream “Communism” at things that are literally not communism. It’s like watching someone confidently shout the wrong answers on Jeopardy. Or watching a toddler insist the moon is a cookie. Or watching your cat try to fight its own reflection. You want to help. You want to explain. But you also want to lay face-down on the floor and let the ancestors take you home.

Here’s the truth. Democratic socialism is not communism. Not historically. Not economically. Not ideologically. Not spiritually. Not even in the same group chat. Democratic socialism says, “Let’s keep democracy, elections, private businesses, and capitalism. But also make sure people don’t die because they can’t afford healthcare.” Communism says, “Let’s abolish private property. Centralize production. And run everything through the state.” These ideologies would not sit together at Thanksgiving. They wouldn’t even sit together at the DMV. Try telling that to someone who thinks “Karl Marx” is the name of a NASCAR driver.

11 Ways Socialism, Democratic Socialism, and Communism Are Not the Same Thing

1. Private property exists in socialism & democratic socialism. Not in communism. Your house? Yours. Your business? Yours. Your lawnmower? Still yours. Communism says, “The lawnmower belongs to the people.”

2. Democratic socialism requires elections. Communism does not. If you can vote for someone other than the ruling party, congratulations. That is not communism.

3. Socialism & democratic socialism use mixed economies. Communism uses central planning. One is capitalism with guardrails. The other is “the government decides how many shoes get made this year.”

4. Democratic socialism protects civil liberties. Communism historically restricts them. If you can complain about the government on Facebook without disappearing, that’s not communism.

5. Socialism & democratic socialism allow private businesses. Communism does not. Under socialism/democratic socialism, you can open a bakery. Under communism, the state owns the bakery, the flour, the ovens, and possibly the cats.

6. Democratic socialism focuses on social welfare. Communism focuses on class abolition. One says, “Let’s help people.” The other says, “Let’s restructure society from scratch.”

7. Socialism & democratic socialism keep markets. Communism eliminates them. If you can choose between Target and Walmart, you’re not in communism.

8. Democratic socialism works with capitalism. Communism replaces it. One is “Let’s fix the leaky roof.” The other is “Let’s burn the house down and rebuild it.”

9. Socialism & democratic socialism allow wealth differences. Communism seeks to eliminate them. Jeff Bezos still exists under socialism. Under communism, Jeff becomes “Citizen Jeff, warehouse worker.”

10. Democratic socialism preserves individual rights. Communism prioritizes collective control. One says, “You have rights.” The other says, “We’ll let you know what your rights are after the meeting.”

11. Socialism & democratic socialism operate within democratic frameworks. Communism does not. One keeps elections, courts, and civil liberties. The other historically centralizes power in the state.

So, the next time someone looks you dead in the eye usually while wearing a shirt with an eagle, a flag, and a Bible all photoshopped together and says, “Socialism leads to communism!” I want you to pause. Take a breath. Let the sage smoke swirl around your head like you’re summoning every ancestor who ever had to explain something obvious to someone determined to misunderstand it. Then smile. Not a regular smile. A Southern smile. The kind that says, “Bless your heart,” without ever using the words. And respond, gently but firmly by saying, “If socialism leads to communism, then your Social Security check is a gateway drug.”Watch their face do that little twitch. You know the one. The twitch that means their brain is trying to reboot like an old Dell computer from 1998.

Then continue. Because this is your moment. “If democratic socialism leads to communism, then your Medicare card is a communist passport. Your public school is a Marxist training camp. And the fire department that saved Earl’s house when he deep-fried that turkey indoors? That’s a taxpayer-funded socialist miracle.”

Let it sink in. Let the silence marinate like chicken in buttermilk. Because you are not arguing with facts. You are arguing with feelings dressed up as fear. Sprinkled with misinformation. Wrapped in Facebook memes. And deep-fried in cable news.

And you have survived far worse. You have survived humidity so thick it feels like soup. You have survived hurricanes, power outages, and men who say, “I’ll fix it later.” You have survived PTA meetings, school fundraisers, and children who wait until 10 PM to tell you they need poster board for a project due tomorrow. You can survive this conversation.

So, walk away. Let the charcoal crackle behind you like applause. Let the ancestors cackle like they’re watching a soap opera. Let your spirit guides fan you with palm leaves and whisper, “You did good, baby.” Because trying to have a conversation with people who are willfully ignorant, are usually the very ones who ate boogers and glue during their childhood. And never outgrew those behaviors.

Because we, at This Puzzled Life, are armed with humor, truth, and the kind of ancestral backup that could move mountains. And when misinformation rises, you rise higher. Mic dropped. Mic shattered. Mic reincarnated as a wiser mic. Thanks for reading! What other political nonsense would you like for me to address?

Affirmation: I speak truth with humor, courage, and ancestral backup. I am unshaken. Unbothered. And fully hydrated.

I’ve Had It Podcast: The Southern Sass Survival Guide for Blue Dots in Red States

“Sometimes the only thing keeping me from losing my already lost religion is two Oklahoma women yelling about petty grievances.”

-This Puzzled Life

Light the charcoal. Sprinkle the sage. Invoke the ancestors. Preferably the messy ones. The ones who show up wearing house shoes. Clutching a gas‑station fountain drink. And whispering, “You’re gonna wanna sit down for this one.”

Because today, we gather in the sacred, humid, mosquito‑infested, spiritually charged arena to praise. Roast. And spiritually hydrate the chaotic holiness that is the I’ve Had It Podcast. The only place where two white liberal women from the red MAGA plains of Oklahoma have somehow built a sanctuary for every exhausted blue‑dot soul trying to survive in a country where people still proudly drink out of Stanley cups like it’s a personality trait. Let me set the table like MeeMaw used to that is loud. And with sweet tea strong enough to dissolve enamel.

Jennifer Welch and Angie “Pumps” Sullivan aren’t just podcasters. They are the patron saints of Petty Grievances. The matriarchs of Messy Liberation. And the spiritual mothers of every liberal woman trapped in a red state. While trying not to throat‑punch someone at the grocery store.

Jennifer, the sarcastically blunt atheist queen, speaks with the kind of clarity that only comes from years of saying, “No, actually, that is stupid” out loud. She’s the type of woman who could walk into a revival tent. Sneeze. And accidentally deconstruct someone’s entire theology. On a side note I’ll also say that she is an Olympic level Pickle Ball Champion like we’ve never seen before in the history of the world.

Then there’s Pumps. Lord help us all. Pumps is a recovering evangelical, the HBIC (Head Beaver In Charge), the teeny weenieologist, the MeeMaw Meat Curtains because she is much older than Jennifer. And apparently the patron saint of Asexuality in the Bible Belt. Her last sexual encounter was somewhere around 1,000 days ago. And Jennifer multiplies that number tenfold with each episode until the math starts giving Old Testament genealogy. We’re approaching, “And on the 40,000th day, Pumps rested.”

And presiding over this circus of holy chaos is Kiley. The beautiful lesbian gaytriot producer who keeps the entire operation from combusting. She’s the glue, the duct tape, the Queer Logistics Coordinator who ensures Jennifer and Pumps don’t accidentally start a small fire while recording. She produces the hilarious fuckery with the precision of a woman who knows exactly how chaotic these two can be.

As a white liberal sarcastic woman myself from the red MAGA state of Mississippi, these ladies have become my emotional support podcast. They take the isolation of wanting equal rights for everyone. While surrounded by neighbors who think democracy is optional. And turn it into a family. A loud, hilarious politically petty family that supports all marginalized groups and stands up for democracy. Despite the red hatred swirling around them.

And let me tell you. And their nicknames for politicians? Baby, they speak fluent Southern shade. People like Donald “Cankles McTaco Tits” Trump, Moses Mike Grindr Johnson, the late Lindsey “Lady” Graham, “Big Titty” Bryon Knoem, “Smokey-eyed sociopath” JD Vance, “Lyin’” Ted Cruz, Flamboyant Jesse “Lady” Waters with Fox News, Natalie “The Bunny Boiler” Harp, Markwayne “Booster Box” Mullin, and others. I heard that recently they both spoke with Mitch “Dead Not Dead” McConnell for twenty minutes from his life support rehabilitation unit. They roast public figures with the same energy my Aunt Linda uses when she says, “I’m not saying she’s trashy. But she does own a leopard‑print Bible cover.”

They expose the closetocracy, the folks who legislate against the very community they enjoy on weekends, with surgical precision and the comedic timing only two women who have truly had it can deliver. Are they crass? Yes. Do they speak my language? Absolutely. Do they have a low tolerance for stupidity? Honey, they have a negative tolerance.

And Pumps, sweet Pumps, if she would stop vaping like she’s trying to summon a Civil War ghost, Jennifer might finally unclench. And if she would please stop pooping in Styrofoam cups like she’s conducting a science fair project, the online audience would stop peeing on ourselves from laughing. Get it together, Pumps. At least the saggin’ dragons are secured.

These women have been my morning oxygen for over a year. They are my people that are  hilarious. And, at times, inappropriate. Unfiltered. Compassionate. And petty in all the right places. If you’re a prude. Easily offended. Or still clinging to conservative Christianity where some Christians use scripture as a mascot for cruelty, this is not your ministry.

But if you’re like me a blue dot in a red state. A queer person whose family can’t quite figure out acceptance. Or someone who needs laughter more than judgment. These ladies feel like home. They are the family I needed. The humor I craved. And the reminder that democracy is worth fighting for even when surrounded by folks who think Jesus rode a dinosaur. And if island living as a blue dot in a red state is what it takes, then baby, I’ll take my new family without question.

So let me say this with the full force of my ancestors, my sass, my trauma, my cats, and my last functioning nerve. The I’ve Had It Podcast isn’t just entertainment. It’s survival. It’s community. It’s the comedic resistance movement for every marginalized person living in a state where Hobby Lobby aisles are filled with people who think equality is a threat to their throw pillows.

Jennifer, Pumps, and Kiley have built a refuge for the tired, the queer, the liberal, the fed‑up, the chronically sarcastic, and the spiritually dehydrated. They’ve given us permission to laugh at the absurdity of our political landscape. To call out hypocrisy with humor. And to find joy in the middle of a country that feels like it’s being run by people who failed eighth‑grade civics. And who ate boogers and glue but never outgrew those behaviors.

I will be a loyal gaytriot as long as these ladies are around. I will follow them into the trenches of democracy, petty grievances, and Pumps’ colon‑control journey. I will take this island living. This blue dot existence. And choose my new family without hesitation.

Thank you, ladies, for your humor, your compassion, and your unapologetic refusal to tolerate bullshit in this tumultuous time. You are the laughter that keeps us fighting. CACAW!!!! Mic dropped. Floor cracked. Humidity rising. Ancestors hollering, “That’s Right, Baby!” Thanks for reading! Please tune in every day to the I’ve Had It podcast for political news with lots of humor.

Affirmation: I honor my truth, humor, identity, and my chosen family. I choose joy. I choose community. And I choose to laugh loudly. Even in the places that try to silence me.

The Blood on Mississippi Soil: Why Silence Is No Longer an Option

“Silence is the oldest accomplice of violence. And Mississippi has been silent for far too long.”

-This Puzzled Life

Light the charcoal, y’all. Because my ancestors are pacing the porch tonight. I can feel them in the humidity, the cicada buzz, and in the way the air gets thick right before a storm. They’re whispering. Tapping their feet. And shaking their heads the way old Southern aunties do when they’ve had enough of the foolishness. And Lord knows Mississippi has given us more than enough foolishness wrapped in Bible verses. Dipped in denial. And served with a side of “the South will rise again” delusion.

Because let’s tell the truth. The “Christian” community down here loves to shout about sin until it’s time to call out violence against Black bodies. Then suddenly everybody’s quiet. Clutching pearls. And humming hymns like silence is salvation. They’ll condemn a teenager’s skirt length before they condemn a system that keeps killing Black people. They’ll preach forgiveness while refusing accountability. They’ll talk about “God’s love” while ignoring the blood on their own soil. And I’m done pretending that’s holy.

Mississippi has always been a place where racism isn’t just a belief. It’s infrastructure. It’s policy. It’s tradition. It’s the foundation poured into the dirt generations ago. And too many folks still treat it like sacred ground.

And now, again, violence has come knocking at the doors of Black families. Again, the state government refuses to investigate. Again, accountability disappears when the killer is white. Again, we are told to “wait for the facts.” While the facts are buried under good ol’ boy politics and backroom handshakes.

A one-year-old Black baby was shot and killed by a white officer over diapers. Let me say that again. A baby died because a grown man with a badge felt threatened by diapers.

A Black teenage boy was found dead under mysterious circumstances. And instead of answers, we get a cover-up thicker than Delta mud. Evidence missing. Stories changing. Officials shrugging like a child’s life is just a paperwork inconvenience.

And now, a Black woman found hanging from a tree in 2026. And the state wants us to believe it’s anything other than what it looks like. Mississippi has a long, violent history with Black bodies and trees. We know what this is. We’ve seen it before. Our ancestors saw it before. And the silence from leadership is louder than any confession.

This isn’t coincidence. This isn’t isolated. This is a pattern, a legacy, and a sickness that Mississippi refuses to treat because too many people benefit from the infection. And let me tell you something. I’m old enough now to stand up and say it plainly. I’m old enough to fight for marginalized groups which include Black folks, brown folks, Indigenous folks, immigrants, and anyone who doesn’t fit the whitewashed mold Mississippi keeps trying to force us into. I’m old enough to say that I’m proud that I didn’t buy into the racist ideology that some of my own family members still cling to like it’s heirloom china.

I broke the cycle. I chose humanity over heritage. I chose truth over tradition. I chose justice over comfort. And if that makes me the black sheep at the family reunion, hand me the potato salad because I’ll graze in the pasture with pride. I’m proud to say I’m not like them. Not molded by their fear. Not shaped by their hate. Not carved into the same brittle statue of “tradition” they keep worshiping like it’s holy. I’m proud to say I crawled out of the same Mississippi clay. And still managed to grow in a different direction. And it was one that didn’t twist my roots around racism and call it heritage.

If rejecting their ideology means I lose my seat at the family table, then pull the chair out from under me. If refusing to swallow their silence means I’m no longer welcome in their church pews, then let the hymns echo without me. If choosing humanity over hypocrisy means I have to walk away from religion entirely, then I’ll walk away barefoot. Head high and unbothered.

Because I refuse to be loyal to a system that kills Black children and calls it “procedure.” I refuse to be loyal to a state that covers up Black death and calls it “ongoing investigation.” I refuse to be loyal to a community that sees a Black woman hanging from a tree and calls it “unfortunate.” I refuse to be loyal to people who hide behind scripture while ignoring suffering. I refuse to be loyal to any ideology that demands my silence while it destroys lives.

Mississippi may be built on racism. But I am not. Mississippi may cling to its racist past. But I do not. Mississippi may worship its own mythology. But I refuse to kneel. I am not like them. I will never be like them. And if breaking away from their beliefs is the cost of protecting my soul, integrity, and humanity, then that’s a price I’ll pay in full with no regrets.

Let them keep their “South will rise again” fantasies. I’m rising in a different direction. One they can’t touch. Can’t claim. And sure as hell can’t control. That’s my mic drop. And I won’t be picking it back up. Thanks for reading! What are your thoughts?

Affirmation: I honor my ancestors by refusing to repeat their pain. I stand in truth. I stand in courage. And I stand in love even when I stand alone.

A Prayer So Wild Even the Angels Clocked Out Early

“Some prayers lift the spirit. Others just lift the eyebrows.”

-This Puzzled Life

Light the charcoal. Sprinkle the sage. Hide your children, your casseroles, and your common sense. Because what I witnessed at that unfortunate local Mississippi event wasn’t a prayer. It was a theological Nascar crash. And every angel in heaven refused to file the insurance claim.

Picture it. A field full of red hats bobbing like a colony of patriotic mushrooms. The air thick with humidity, Axe body spray, and generational resentment. A folding table sagging under the weight of mayonnaise‑based salads. And a speaker system held together with duct tape and denial.

Then he stepped forward. The Chosen One of the Red‑Hat Prayer Circle. A man built like a refrigerator with opinions. A man whose shirt had more eagles than the actual sky. A man who looked like he’d been baptized in Monster Energy. He grabbed the microphone like he was about to drop a mixtape called “Gospel of the Grievance.”

He clears his throat like he’s about to summon the Holy Ghost, the founding fathers, and the HOA board all at once. And then. Lord help us. He opened his mouth.

What came out was not a prayer. It was not a blessing. It was not even a coherent sentence structure. It was a spiritual Yelp review written by a man who thinks the Holy Trinity is God, Country, and Bathroom Legislation. Then he begins The Prayer. The one that made the angels file HR complaints.

“Heavenly Father. We come before you today under this blessed Mississippi sun. Which you made hotter every year to punish the radical left for their wickedness.

Lord, we know that every single problem in this world can be traced back to them. The hurricanes? The liberals. The price of eggs? The liberals. My gout flaring up last Tuesday? Father God, that was the liberals too.

And Lord, we thank you that our sins don’t count. Because we carry the “Jesus Warranty.” We swipe it like a rewards card. We sin. We repent. We sin again. And you just keep stamping that little heavenly punch card. But the liberals, Lord? Unforgivable. They are the real ones on the predatory registry. Not all the republicans. But that’s none of my business, Father.

Lord, we thank You that here in Mississippi, we stay focused on the things that matter most like genitals, bathrooms, and our loyal governor who kneels so faithfully before the Orange Messiah. He bends the knee so hard, Lord, he’s got calluses shaped like patriotism.

Father, we lift up the windmills to you. Those demonic pinwheels of destruction. They’re out there slaughtering birds. Driving whales insane. And screaming so loud they give people cancer. Lord, we know the whales are acting up because they can’t handle the noise. They’re liberals at heart, Father. Sensitive. Emotional. Always protesting something.

And Lord, we rebuke the immigrants who are coming here to eat our dogs and cats. We know this because someone’s cousin’s neighbor’s Facebook post said so. And that’s good enough for us.

Father, protect us from the left trying to make everyone gay and transgender. They’re out here handing out pronouns like coupons. Even though they say that pronouns are in the English language. And that’s also a hoax. Next thing you know, my truck’s gonna identify as a Prius.

Lord, we thank you for the brave idea of firing nuclear weapons into hurricanes. We know it would’ve worked if the deep state hadn’t interfered. We thank you for the tariffs on penguins, Father. The money is pouring in. We don’t know where from. But it’s pouring in.

We thank you for answering our prayer about gasoline. It’s the lowest it’s ever been. Even though the sign says otherwise. But we don’t read numbers. Lord numbers are liberal. We thank you for the funds for the Pedophile Patio at the White House. We don’t know what it is. But the liberals said it’s bad. So, it must really be good. And that’s enough for us.

Lord, we ask You to bless our crosses. Which absolve us of all wrongdoing. We wear them proudly, Father, even when we’re screaming at cashiers or crashing Grindr. Not that we’ve ever crashed Grindr. That was the liberals.

And Father, we rebuke the rumors about ladybugs we may or may not have contracted from Lindsey “Lady” Graham. We don’t have them. We’ve never had them. We don’t think. That’s the liberals’ fault too. Lord, we pray for this nation. We pray for our bathrooms. We pray for our genitals. We pray for our Orange Messiah. And we pray that you continue to forgive us instantly while holding everyone else accountable forever. In your holy, conservative, red‑hat‑approved name we pray. Amen.”

As the final “Amen” echoed across the field. Bounced off the port‑a‑potties. Ricocheting through the humidity. And startling at least three confused squirrels. I realized something profound. This wasn’t a prayer. This was a confession disguised as patriotism. A spiritual tantrum. A theological meltdown. A holy‑ghost‑free revival sponsored by conspiracy theories and lukewarm potato salad.

The red‑hat faithful walked away feeling forgiven. Justified. And spiritually moisturized. Not because they’d repented. But because they’d shouted loudly enough to drown out their own guilt. Meanwhile, the rest of us stood there blinking like we’d just witnessed a raccoon steal a wedding cake.

If delusion had a megachurch, this prayer would’ve been the keynote speaker. If hypocrisy had a hymn book, this prayer would’ve been track one. If nonsense had a national anthem, this prayer would’ve been sung at every football game.

And here’s my final word. May we all be delivered from prayers that sound like Facebook comments. May our humor stay sharp. Our queerness stay loud. And our spirits stay unbothered. And may the next local event have better food, better theology, and fewer polyester hats. Thanks for reading! And thank you for your attention to this matter. Praise Be To Allah!

Affirmation: I stand rooted in truth, humor, and queer resilience. No amount of red‑hat chaos can shake my spirit or dim my brilliance.

Suicide Awareness Month: When Silence Becomes the Sin

“I don’t blame the people we lost. I blame the silence that swallowed them.”

-This Puzzled Life

Light the charcoal. Sprinkle the sage. Lord knows, if we’re gonna talk about Suicide Awareness Month in the Deep South, we’re gonna need all the spiritual reinforcements we can get. The air gets thick. The whispers get quieter. And the truth starts pacing the room like it’s looking for a way out.

Let me set the scene. It’s September in the Deep South. Humidity thick enough to baptize you against your will. Church signs flashing Bible verses like spiritual traffic tickets. Every conversation about mental health wrapped in a casserole dish of denial. Then Suicide Awareness Month rolls around. And the way conservative Southern Baptists respond? You’d think someone asked them to admit they’ve been depressed since Reagan.

They hit you with the classic, “Thoughts and prayers.” And that’s the entire statement. Full stop. Period. End of sentence. End of conversation. If you try to talk about suicide beyond that? Oh, honey that happens behind closed doors. Whispered like gossip. Treated like sin. And buried under shame so thick you’d need a backhoe to dig it out. That’s how the shaming works down here. Not by yelling. But by refusing to speak at all. And I’m tired of silence being the loudest killer in the room. Suicide isn’t a “them” problem. It’s an all of us problem. And the numbers don’t lie. Even when the people in power do.

Over 49,000 people died by suicide in 2023. And that’s one death every 11 minutes. Suicide rates have climbed back to their previous peak after years of fluctuation. But some groups are hurting more than others. https://www.cdc.gov/suicide/facts/data.html?, 2026

1.American Indian & Alaska Native Communities

These communities have some of the highest suicide rates in the nation. Youth in these groups are disproportionately impacted due to historical trauma. Lack of access to care. And systemic neglect.

2.LGBTQIA+ Youth

LGBTQIA+ youth face significantly higher suicide risk due to rejection, discrimination, and lack of safe spaces. And let’s be honest. The current political climate isn’t helping. Policies targeting queer and trans youth only increase fear, isolation, and hopelessness.

3.Black Youth

Black youth suicide rates have been rising with unique stressors tied to racism, community stigma, and lack of culturally competent mental health care.

4.Veterans

Veterans continue to face elevated suicide risk due to PTSD, trauma, homelessness, and lack of adequate support. The VA reports long‑term patterns of high suicide rates among veterans. Especially those facing mental health and substance use disorders.

5.Young People (15–24)

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people. In 2024 alone, nearly 5,915 young people died by suicide.

I don’t write this from a distance. I write this from the front row of grief and personal struggle.

My life has been touched by suicide from more angles than I ever wanted. I’ve seen it happen to friends and family. People I loved. People I tried to reach. People I didn’t know were hurting until it was too late. And let me say this clearly. I am not mad at them. I do not hate them. I am not angry at what they did.

I am just deeply, sorry that they weren’t able to be reached. Sorry that the world failed them. Sorry that shame kept them silent. Sorry that help wasn’t accessible, safe, or welcoming. Sorry that they believed the lie that their pain was a burden. They deserved better. And so do the people still here.

I’m not here to sugarcoat this. Our nation’s mental health crisis is rising in part because of the current administration’s policies. And the harm they inflict on marginalized communities. When leaders create fear. Strip rights. Target vulnerable groups. And normalize cruelty. The emotional fallout is real. People feel unsafe. People feel hopeless. People feel hunted. And hopelessness is fertile ground for despair. This isn’t partisan. It’s human. And the statistics reflect the pain people are living through.

And here’s the thing I keep coming back to, over and over, like a hymn that won’t leave my bones. We are losing people because we refuse to talk. We are losing people because shame is easier to hand out than compassion. We are losing people because silence is the South’s favorite weapon. And its most deadly.

I grew up watching folks whisper about suicide like it was a scandal instead of a tragedy. I watched churches pray for “healing” while refusing to name the wound. I watched families bury their children and still pretend nothing was wrong. I watched people I loved slip through cracks that should never have existed in the first place. And I’m done pretending that this is normal. I’m done pretending that this is holy. I’m done pretending that this is anything but deadly.

Because the truth is this. People don’t die from weakness. People die from isolation. People die from shame. People die from being told their pain is an inconvenience. And if that stings, good. Some truths are supposed to.

I have lost people I loved. People I laughed with. People I prayed for. People I would’ve driven across state lines for if I had known they needed me. And I don’t carry anger toward them. I don’t carry resentment. I don’t carry judgment. What I carry is sorrow. A deep, marrow‑level sorrow that they didn’t feel reachable. That they didn’t feel safe. That they didn’t feel like this world had room for their pain. And I will never stop wishing they had stayed. Not because their leaving was wrong. But because they deserved a world that didn’t make leaving feel like the only option.

Let me say this plainly. Because I’m not sugarcoating a damn thing today. Our country is hurting because our leadership is hurting us. Policies that target the vulnerable create despair. Cruelty from the top trickles down like poison in the water supply. And if that makes someone uncomfortable, they can go ahead and sit with that discomfort. Maybe it’ll teach them something. I’m not here to protect feelings. I’m here to protect lives.

This is my altar call, benediction, my Southern‑fried truth served hot and holy. We cannot pray away what we refuse to confront. We cannot heal what we refuse to name. We cannot save people we refuse to see. If we want to stop losing our loved ones, we have to stop hiding behind “thoughts and prayers” like they’re bulletproof. We have to talk. We have to listen. We have to show up. We have to fight for the living with the same passion we mourn the dead. Because every single person lost to suicide deserved a world that didn’t break them. So, if you hear me. If you really hear me. Then stand up. Even in the back. Even if your knees pop like bubble wrap. And say it with your whole chest. Thanks for reading! How can you relate to this?

Affirmation: My voice is a lifeline. My truth is a lantern. I speak so others don’t have to suffer in the dark.

The Bitchuation Room: Public Funk and Other Seasonal Disasters

“Southern summers will test your patience, your deodorant, and your faith. But nothing melts faster than other people’s manners.”

-This Puzzled Life

Light the charcoal. Sprinkle the sage. The public body odor situation in a Southern summer has reached a level that can only be handled with spiritual cleansing, municipal ordinances, and maybe a pressure washer. We have reached that special time of year when the humidity is so disrespectful it feels personal. And the general public is out here smelling like they’ve been slow‑cooked in their own decisions. If you’ve stepped outside lately and thought, “Why does the air taste like somebody’s day?” Congratulations, you’ve survived another Mississippi summer morning.

There’s hot. And then there’s Southern hot. And it’s where the humidity sits on your chest like an unpaid bill. The moment you step outside, the air grabs you by the throat like, “You sure you wanna do this?” And the public? The public smells like they lost the battle hours ago.

We’re talking about these smells:

  • “I’ve been running errands since 8 a.m.” funk.
  • “I thought body spray counted as a shower” funk.
  • “I sat on vinyl seats in shorts” funk.
  • “I mowed the lawn and then went to Walmart” funk.
  • “I’m glistening, not sweating” funk (ma’am… you are sweating).

The South is humid enough to baptize you against your will. And yet somehow folks are out here smelling like they’ve been sautéed in their own regrets.

There’s a special kind of scent that only appears between June and September. It’s not quite sweat. Not quite despair. But a collaboration between the two. A duet. A remix. A limited-edition fragrance called Eau de Why Did I Leave the House? You can smell it in grocery store aisles, gas station lines, post office lobbies, any outdoor festival where someone brought a lawn chair, and the DMV (year‑round but amplified in summer). It’s the kind of aroma that makes you rethink your errands, your life choices, and your proximity to other humans.

We’ve all encountered these summer scent celebrities which include:

  • The man who jogged “just a little bit” but smells like he ran from the law.
  • The woman who swears she “doesn’t sweat,” while actively melting.
  • The teenager who believes deodorant is optional.
  • The person who got out of a car with leather seats and left half their soul behind.
  • And the festival goer who smells like they’ve been marinating in the sun since Thursday.

If we’re being honest, the South needs deodorant checkpoints. Public misting tents filled with cold air and accountability, a statewide ban on polyester. A “Shower Before You Leave Home” PSA campaign. And emergency cooling stations that are just walk‑in freezers. Because at this point, the humidity is not the only thing that assaults people.

If your personal aroma can be described as “interactive,” “memorable,” or “lingering,” please stay home until further notice. Summer in the South is already a full‑contact sport. We don’t need the bonus level of surprise scents.

And that’s where we are, folks. A region full of good-hearted people who smell like they’ve been marinating in a Crock‑Pot set to “Low and Regret.” Until deodorant becomes a civic duty and showers are treated like the sacred rituals they are, the South will continue to function as one big, sweaty, aromatic potluck of questionable scents. If your personal aroma has texture, stay home. Thanks for reading! And for God’s sake, bathe and use D-O for the B-O!

Affirmation: I move through this humid, chaotic world with grace, humor, and a scent profile I can be proud of. Other folks’ funk is not my spiritual assignment.

Why Does The Gay Community Keeps Getting Treated Like The Federal Government’s Emotional Support Scapegoat?

“If drag queens were dangerous, the Pentagon would’ve hired them already.”

-This Puzzled Life

Light the Charcoal. Sprinkle the Sage. This is a queer survival sermon for a country that keeps missing the point. And also, a sermon for the people in the back. But first we need to spiritually fumigate the room. The hypocrisy is thick. The contradictions are bold. And the political theater is so dramatic it deserves its own theme song.

Let the smoke rise like a Southern mama’s eyebrow when she hears someone say, “I’m not homophobic, but…” The “but” is always where the foolishness lives. And if the government spent half as much time fixing real problems as they do trying to regulate drag queens, pronouns, and who gets to pee where, this country would have free healthcare, affordable housing, a postal system that doesn’t lose your packages, and potholes filled with ethically sourced glitter.

But no. Instead, they’re out here acting like LGBTQIA+ people are a glitter‑powered militia plotting to overthrow the Republic with brunch menus and Beyoncé remixes. If queer people had that kind of power, the Capitol would’ve been redecorated in jewel tones and mood lighting decades ago.

Reason #1: We’re too fabulous to regulate

Bureaucracy loves order. It loves forms. It loves rules like “sign here, here, here, and also initial your soul.”But queer people? We show up like, “gender is more interesting than your filing cabinet.”, “no, I will not shrink myself to make you comfortable.” And “yes, this outfit is a political statement.” Trans folks especially break every boring little box the government tries to stuff people into. And nothing terrifies a bureaucracy more than a human being who refuses to be reduced to a checkbox.

Reason #2: Trans people expose the government’s worst fear. That identity is personal, not regulated

Trans people walk around every day proving that identity is self‑determined. Autonomy is real. Bodily freedom is non‑negotiable. And gender is not a federal highway with only two exits. That level of self‑possession shakes the table harder than a Pentecostal praise break.

Reason #3: We’re the easiest group to blame when they don’t want to talk about real problems

When the government doesn’t want to talk about healthcare, poverty, infrastructure, climate, wages, or why the DMV line is still 4 hours long. They go, “Quick! Hand me a queer person to blame!” It’s classic misdirection. It’s kind of like a magician. But instead of pulling a rabbit out of a hat, they pull out a bill restricting drag brunches.

Reason #4: The demonization is loud and the contradictions are louder

Let’s talk about the demonization of queer and trans people. The irony is so thick you could spread it on a biscuit. Some folks in the conservative political world will stand at a podium. Clutch a Bible like it’s a backstage pass to heaven. And declare that queer people are destroying America. And then turn around and behave in ways that would make a drag queen whisper, “Now baby, that’s between you and your therapist.”

It’s giving public morality, private chaos. And do as I say, not as I do. If hypocrisy were a sport, some of y’all would have Olympic medals.

Reason #5: Demonizing queer people while trying to sanitize harmful behavior elsewhere

Here’s where the sage needs to burn a little hotter. There’s a bizarre cultural pattern where some people loudly demonize LGBTQIA+ folks while simultaneously trying to downplay, excuse, or normalize harmful behavior in other areas that actually put children at risk. It’s the strangest double standard. A drag queen reading a book? “Danger!” Actual conversations about protecting kids from real harm? “Let’s not be dramatic.” It’s like living in a world where the smoke alarm goes off every time someone lights a birthday candle. But stays silent when the kitchen is actually on fire.

This contradiction isn’t about morality. It’s about distraction. It’s about misdirection. It’s about making sure nobody notices the real issues tap‑dancing in the background wearing tap shoes from Hobby Lobby.

Reason #6: Drag queens are too powerful

Drag queens have stage presence, community influence, sequins, microphones, and the ability to read a senator to filth without breaking a nail. The government knows if drag queens ever unionize, it’s over. The Pentagon cannot compete with a well‑timed death drop.

Reason #7: Queer joy is resistance

Queer people, especially trans folks, have mastered the art of joy in a world that keeps trying to dim them. That joy is political. That joy is rebellious. That joy is contagious. And nothing scares a system built on conformity more than people who refuse to be ashamed.

Reason #8: We don’t die quietly. We organize.

Every time the government tries to scapegoat the LGBTQIA+ community, queer folks respond with mutual aid, court challenges, community networks, fundraisers, marches, and a drag show themed “You Tried It, But We’re Still Here.” We don’t disappear. We get louder, smarter, and more fabulous.

Reason #9: We hold up a mirror

Queer and trans people reveal truths about society. And these truths are, who gets protected? Who gets ignored? Who gets punished for existing? And who gets celebrated for conformity?

When you hold up a mirror to power, power tends to say, “Actually, could you put that mirror down? I don’t like the lighting.” And the moment power starts whining about the lighting, that’s when my cats kick the door open like, ‘Oh, you don’t like the reflection? Don’t worry. We brought a whole panel discussion and a ring light.’”

PIPER: I’ve called this emergency press conference because the humans are once again blaming queer folks for things they didn’t do. And frankly, I’m tired.

TINKERBELL: I have reviewed the allegations and found them to be stupid. Deeply stupid. Embarrassingly stupid.

COCO: I knocked a plant off the shelf this morning and nobody blamed the gays for that. So, clearly the government is slipping.

PIPER: They’re out here demonizing queer people while ignoring actual problems. Meanwhile, I’ve been asking for universal basic treats for YEARS.

TINKERBELL: And the hypocrisy? Whew. They’re clutching pearls about drag queens reading books while ignoring harmful behavior elsewhere. The math ain’t mathing.

COCO: If they cared about children, they’d ban vacuum cleaners. Those things are TERRIFYING.

PIPER: Focus, Coco.

COCO: I am focused. Focused on justice. And snacks.

TINKERBELL: Motion to declare queer people fabulous and not the problem.

COCO: Motion to add snacks.

PIPER: Motions passed. Democracy lives.

COCO: Why do some people scream “protect the children” every time a drag queen opens a book? But go silent when real issues show up like uninvited relatives at Thanksgiving?

TINKERBELL: It’s giving “I don’t read, so nobody else should either.”

PIPER: It’s like yelling at a houseplant for being too green. While ignoring the raccoon in the pantry.

TINKERBELL: The contradictions are louder than Coco knocking over a water glass at 3 a.m.

COCO: I knock things over for justice.

PIPER: And then there’s the “family values” crowd behaving like a soap opera plot twist.

TINKERBELL: If you’re going to preach morality, try living it for more than 12 minutes.

COCO: Twelve minutes is generous.

PIPER: In conclusion: Distraction. Deflection. Drama. And occasionally, pure comedy.

Let the last of the smoke curl around the truth they keep trying to hide. Queer people and especially trans folks aren’t the threat. We’re the reminder. We’re the proof that freedom is possible. We’re the living, breathing evidence that identity cannot be legislated into a filing cabinet. And that scares the hell out of systems built on control.

So the next time someone tries to blame the LGBTQIA+ community for society’s problems, smile sweetly and say, “Baby, if queer people had that much power, this country would be running smoother than a drag queen’s legs on pageant night.”  Sequins still sparkling.

Affirmation: I shine so brightly that even when power flinches at its own reflection. I stay rooted, radiant, and unbothered. My truth is steady. My joy is sacred. And no amount of misdirection can dim what was never theirs to control.

Invisible Drones, Algae Shots & Cage Fights on the Lawn: America Has Officially Lost the Plot

“If the government wanted to distract us, they should’ve at least been successful at cleaning the pool first.”

-This Puzzled Life

Light the charcoal. Sprinkle the sage. Tell the ancestors to bring EVERYTHING. Because today, we are grilling the latest chapter in the Trump Administration’s™ ongoing performance art piece titled: “What If Government, But Make It Walmart at 2 AM?”

My ancestors, who survived famine, war, plagues, the Great Depression, disco, and the invention of mayonnaise‑based salads, are hovering in the afterlife clutching rosaries, moonshine, and emotional support cigarettes. They whisper, “We did not cross oceans for this.” “We did not survive smallpox for this.” “We did not wear powdered wigs for this.” And yet. Here we are.

The White House lawn, sorry, the People’s Patch of Grass, has once again been transformed into a white‑trash UFC arena. Where sweaty men roll around in a cage like they’re auditioning for Magic Mike: Government Shutdown Edition.

The cage sits in the middle of the grass like someone ordered “UFC but make it emotionally repressed” off Wish. Tourists gather. Security pretends this is normal. And a lineup of men who look like they pre‑gamed with creatine, Axe body spray, and a quick scroll through Grindr. They begin stretching like they’re preparing for the world’s sweatiest Pride after‑party. Because nothing says “governing” like two shirtless dudes rolling around in a cage while America collectively whispers, “Is this foreign policy or foreplay?”

Piper: “Mother, why are the humans fighting in a metal box? Is this a mating ritual? Should we be concerned?”

Coco: “I’ve seen less homoerotic tension in a gay sauna on half‑price margarita night.”

Tinkerbell: “I’m only here for the snacks. Also, someone needs to drain that pool before it becomes sentient.”

And then, because absurdity must always escalate, the Trump Administration announces a fake assassination attempt involving Iranian drones that no one saw. No one heard. No one reported. And no one can explain. Because apparently even the drones were like, “Nah, we’re good.”

Suddenly, a man in a suit sprints across the lawn screaming, “THERE WAS AN ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT!” Everyone freezes. The fighters stop mid‑grapple. The tourists gasp. My cats blink.

Piper: “Mother, what?”

Coco: “By who? The drama club?”

Tinkerbell: “I bet it’s fake.”

And then the details emerge. The threat was Iranian drones. The drones were invisible. The attack was unconfirmed. The evidence was classified. The witnesses were busy. And the drones were never actually here. So basically, it was a crisis that didn’t happen. It was  reported by people who weren’t there. And it was involving drones that don’t exist.

Piper: “Mother, is this enrichment?”

Coco: “This is why aliens won’t visit us.”

Tinkerbell: “I’ve had hairballs more credible than this.”

Meanwhile, the Reflecting Pool…

Once majestic. Now the color of a Shrek smoothie. Flaking blue paint drifting like sad confetti. A smell that says, “Someone dumped a bucket of hot dog water in here.”

Piper: “Is that algae?”

Coco: “Is that paint peeling?”

Tinkerbell: “Is that the symbolic decay of national integrity?”

Me: “Yes, girls. Yes it is.”

And the Trump Administration never misses a chance to monetize national embarrassment. They announce the newest grift called:

THE PATRIOT PACK™ -$250

  • One (1) clump of algae harvested by an unpaid intern.
  • One (1) authentic blue paint chip scraped by a man named Randy who definitely vapes.
  • One (1) certificate of authenticity printed on a Chili’s receipt.

All in honor of the 250th Celebration of America, which would make the Founding Fathers want to walk into the ocean. Fake their own deaths. Or rise from the grave just to say, “We didn’t write the Constitution for this.” My ancestors join in from the spirit realm, “We crossed oceans for this?” “We survived smallpox for this?” “We lived through powdered wigs for this?” Great‑Aunt Myrtle adds, “At least the men are pretty.”

Enter: Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

Just when the chaos reaches peak humidity, a new figure emerges wearing flip‑flops, necklace of raccoon teeth, and the confidence of someone who once drank kombucha brewed in a boot. He steps up to a podium made of reclaimed pallets and emotional instability. He clears his throat. And announces, “THE REFLECTING POOL IS A MIRACLE.”

My cats freeze. My ancestors clutch their ghostly pearls. Tourists stop mid‑selfie. He continues, “This nutritious, peroxide‑infused, snake‑venom‑enhanced, algae is the future of American health.”

Piper: “Mother… is he okay?”

Coco: “Absolutely not.”

Tinkerbell: “I don’t want whatever he’s on.”

He waves a mason jar of glowing green sludge like it’s holy water from the Church of Whole Foods. He declares that one 8‑oz glass of Reflecting Pool Algae™ can cure Ebola, depression, substance abuse, homelessness, addiction, dementia, low sperm count, cancer, mental illness, autism, low birth rates, AIDS, seasonal allergies, Hanta virus, screwworm, Covid 1-19, bad vibes, accidental or intentional snake bites, rabies from raccoons, and “the spiritual constipation of the American soul.”

Piper: “Mother, that’s not how biology works.”

Coco: “That’s not how anything works.”

Tinkerbell: “I’m still not willing to try it.”

And of course it gets worse. He also announces the algae’s potency is enhanced by “a micro‑dose of raccoon penile essence. Which was harvested ethically from raccoons who died of natural causes such as bar fights or eating fireworks.” My ancestors scream in Latin. Piper faints. Coco gags. Tinkerbell whispers, “I knew raccoons were up to something.”

Some people cheer. Some people vomit. One man tries to buy a gallon jug. Another asks if it comes in sugar‑free. A woman from Ohio asks if it’s keto. He assures them, “It’s paleo, keto, vegan, carnivore, gluten‑free, dairy‑free, guilt‑free, and spiritually orgasmic.”

The Trump Administration immediately embraces the miracle. They announce a national algae initiative. A Reflecting Pool bottling plant. A Raccoon Essence Research Grant. A Buy One, Get One Half‑Off Patriot Pack™ And a new slogan, “Drink Up, America.” My ancestors begin drafting a petition to be reincarnated as Canadians.

And the leader of our horrifically spiraling country, President Donald Trump, is the man that governs like a Roomba with a dying battery. In the middle of the chaos, the cage match, the algae sales pitch, the invisible drones, the raccoon‑essence wellness seminar, he decided it was the perfect moment to take one of his signature American taxpayer funded, mini-stroke, dementia public naps, which his staff insists on calling “extended blinking” or “patriotic micro‑rest cycles.” Cameras zoomed in as his eyelids began performing what can only be described as a slow‑motion garage door malfunction. They were fluttering like a moth trapped in a lampshade. Tourists whispered, “Is he meditating?” While my cats debated whether he was buffering. Rebooting. Or experiencing yet another mini‑stroke‑adjacent moment that his administration would later blame on “wind fatigue.” Piper tilted her head. Coco rolled her eyes. Tinkerbell muttered, “Mother, the man is power‑napping through the downfall of civilization.” And honestly? She wasn’t wrong.

At the end of the day, America doesn’t need algae smoothies, raccoon penis extract, invisible drone attacks, cage fights on federal property, or $250 commemorative mold. We need accountability. We need sanity. We need leadership that doesn’t involve drinking pond scum like it’s a wellness shot from Satan’s juice bar.

And no matter how many shiny, chaotic, homoerotic lawn events the Trump Administration throws at us, the American people have not forgotten about the Epstein files. Nice try, Donald! Charcoal extinguished. Cats disgusted. Ancestors filing complaints. Nation still watching. Thanks for watching! What do you think of the embarrassing events that was supposed to celebrate our country?

Affirmation: I am grounded. I am powerful. And I refuse to be gaslit by algae, drones, raccoon essence, or commemorative mold.

Memorial Day Mourning: When Patriotism Meets Disrespect

“A nation that forgets its fallen has already surrendered its soul.”

-This Puzzled Life

Light the charcoal. Today, ancestors, I need you close. I need every grandmother who prayed over folded flags. Every great‑uncle who never made it home. Every lineage‑bearer who stood against tyranny with nothing but grit, fear, and a trembling hope that their sacrifice would mean something. I need them all gathered around this fire with me. Because my heart is breaking in a way I can feel in my teeth.

Memorial Day is supposed to be sacred. A day of reverence. A day where the air itself feels heavy with memory. A day where we whisper “thank you” to the ones who went in our place. I don’t care how they voted. What bumper sticker they had. Or what political arguments they hollered at the TV. They went. They stood in the line of fire so I didn’t have to. They carried the weight of a nation on their backs. And some never came home to tell the story.

And now. We are living in an era where their sacrifices are being mocked. Minimized. And twisted into political theater. Where illegal war chew up American lives for reasons that don’t hold water. Where the Commander‑in‑Chief has openly called fallen soldiers “losers” and “suckers,” according to multiple reports from former officials. And I swear, ancestors, I can feel you shifting in your graves like, “We did NOT fight fascism for this.”

Let me be clear. This isn’t about politics. This is about decency, honor, and basic human respect. And they are the qualities that should never be partisan. And yet here we are. Watching behavior that would’ve gotten any of our mamas slapped with a sandal for raising someone so disrespectful. Here are examples that are widely reported. Documented. And discussed. They are of how Donald Trump has disrespected veterans and fallen soldiers.

  • Calling fallen soldiers “losers” and “suckers”– reported by multiple sources which including former senior officials. My ancestors just collectively rolled their eyes so hard the earth tilted.
  • Skipping a WWI cemetery visit in France because “it was raining.” Sir, they fought in trenches full of mud, blood, and rats the size of emotional support animals. You can handle a drizzle.
  • Attacking Gold Star families-families who lost loved ones in service. The audacity. The disrespect. The spiritual malpractice.
  • Mocking Senator John McCain’s capture-“I like people who weren’t captured.” My ancestors are now pacing the room with hands on hips.
  • Using the military as political props-something every veteran I know despises. Because service is not a campaign backdrop.
  • Delaying military aid for political leverage-which put actual soldiers at risk. The ancestors have now lit their own charcoal.

And the emotional stability? Lord. It’s giving “someone sprinting down the interstate with their bra and underwear on the outside of their clothes.” It’s giving me chaos. It’s giving “not a single ancestor signed off on this behavior.” And the compassion? About as present as a cactus at a cuddle party.

This is not how you honor the fallen. This is not how you respect the living. This is not how you lead a nation that has buried far too many of its children. My ancestors fought authoritarianism with their bare hands. Their last breaths. Their prayers whispered into the dirt. And now authoritarianism is parading through our streets wearing a red hat and a tantrum. While insisting it’s the second coming of patriotism. It’s not patriotism. It’s performance. And it’s breaking my heart.

And so, on this Memorial Day. I stand here with the charcoal lit. And the ancestors gathered like a celestial neighborhood watch, I have to say it plainly. America cannot honor its fallen while allowing a man who dodged the draft five times to strut around pretending to be the patron saint of patriotism. America cannot claim to respect sacrifice while elevating someone who avoided service with the infamous “bone spurs” excuse. A condition that miraculously healed the moment the danger passed and the privilege resumed. America cannot pretend to value courage while applauding someone whose greatest battle was apparently against accountability.

Because let’s be honest. The disrespect being hurled at our veterans and fallen soldiers isn’t coming from a place of strength. It’s coming from a place of entitlement so bloated it could have its own gravitational pull. It’s coming from a man who has never had to work for anything. Who has never known the terror of a battlefield. Who has never stood in the boots of the people he mocks.

And the behavior? Hold my sweet tea. We are watching a grown man. A man who holds the highest office in the land. Who is behaving with the emotional steadiness of someone who discovered social media for the first time and decided to treat it like a 3 a.m. confessional booth. Extended blinking sessions like he’s buffering. Late‑night ranting on whatever platform will still have him like Temu Twitter. And typing like a raccoon who found a phone in a staff member’s purse at a memory care facility. And is now live‑blogging its escape attempt.

And the consistency? The only thing consistent is the stench both literal and the metaphorical odor of disrespect, chaos, and ego that follows him like a cloud of Axe body spray applied by a teenager who doesn’t understand dosage.

Meanwhile, our fallen soldiers. The ones who actually knew sacrifice. Who actually faced danger. Who actually gave everything. Are being used as props in a performance that dishonors everything they stood for. My ancestors fought tyrants who believed they were above the people. Above the truth. And now, authoritarianism is parading through our streets loud. Petty. Self‑obsessed. And wrapped in a flag it does not deserve to touch.

So, hear me clearly. I honor our fallen. I honor our veterans. I honor every soul who went in my place so I could live free. But I will not and cannot stay silent while their memory is dragged through the mud by someone who never carried anything heavier than his own ego. This Memorial Day, I stand with the ancestors, the fallen, and the truth. And to the one disrespecting them? Your performance is over. Your act is tired. And the nation you claim to love deserves better. Thanks for reading! God bless those who lost their lives and took a stand against fascism and tyranny. What are your thoughts?

Affirmation: I honor the brave. I speak the truth. And I stand with the ancestors who fought for freedom before me.

Light the Charcoal: A Southern Exorcism of America’s Rape Culture

“Rape culture doesn’t survive because predators are powerful. It survives because communities are silent.”

-This Puzzled Life

Light the charcoal. Call the ancestors. Summon the willfully blind Christians. And the politicians who pretend not to hear. We need to talk about rape culture in America. The one our government, our churches, and our “good Christian families” keep blessing with silence, excuses, and casseroles. And yes, I said “blessing.” Because at this point the way folks defend predators looks less like morality. And more like a full‑blown revival service for the unholy.

Let’s be real. The state of rape culture is a national embarrassment with a prayer chain. If any case even remotely resembled the Epstein files in another era, investigators would’ve been sprinting like their pensions depended on it. They would’ve been flipping mattresses. Interrogating houseplants. And subpoenaing the family dog.

But now? Now we’ve got a chunk of society the red hats, pearl‑clutchers, and “I did my own research” prophets. Who are bending over backwards to excuse behavior that would’ve made the Old Testament God pull out the smiting stick. And the churches? The churches are quieter than a deacon caught with his hand in the offering plate.

Pastors out here preaching “love thy neighbor” while refusing to even look at the neighbors who’ve been raped. Abused. Trafficked. Or discarded. Why? Because calling out evil might upset Brother Bob and Sister Brenda. The ones who tithe big and sin bigger. They’re terrified of making their donors have uncomfortable fee‑fees in their tum‑tums.

Meanwhile the Jesus they claim to follow? He would’ve flipped those tables. Reset them. And flipped them again like a CrossFit workout. But modern conservative Christianity? They’re too busy protecting their reputations and their potlucks to protect actual people. The hypocrisy is Olympic‑level.

They brag saying, “We donated clothes!” “We gave canned goods!” “We helped an organization!” But ask them, “Have you gone into homeless camps?” “Have you met LGBTQ+ folks and learned their needs?” “Have you talked to gang‑involved youth?” “Have you gone into prisons?” “Have you sat with a rape survivor and listened without judgment?” The answer is always, “No, but we thought about donating more socks.”

And the truth is this. They don’t want the stories. They don’t want the truth. They don’t want the discomfort. They want selective compassion. The kind that doesn’t require them to confront their own cowardice.

In the Deep South, especially places like Petal, Mississippi, silence is a religion all its own. People will gossip about who bought a new lawnmower. But mention rape, molestation, trafficking, or abuse and suddenly everyone’s got laryngitis. Your own family? They’d rather call you dramatic than confront the truth that predators thrive in silence. And that silence is a community project.

They’ll say, “That was a long time ago.,” “Why didn’t she tell someone earlier?,” “You need to move past it.” Or my personal favorite, “That’s water under the bridge.” Ma’am that “bridge” is built out of victims’ bones. And me a survivor who endured years of marital rape, stalking, gas lighting, humiliation, sexual perversion, coercion, and religiously‑justified abuse is still paying the price while they protect their comfort.

We live in a country where victims are interrogated. Predators are defended. Power is worshipped. Accountability is optional. And “locker room talk” is treated like scripture. People will twist themselves into pretzels to excuse the powerful. Even when over 1,000 children were harmed by the Epstein network, according to released documents. But sure. Let’s keep pretending the real threat is drag queens reading books.

I’ve worked with the hardest populations. The ones society throws away. And I’ve seen what happens when someone finally shows them compassion. The anger softens. The armor cracks. The humanity shows. The tears fall. And the healing begins just like it did with me after years of facing condemnation over compassion.

But conservative Christianity? They’d rather cling to superiority than step into the mess where Jesus actually lived. Jesus wasn’t selective. But they are. Jesus didn’t avoid the “dirty people.” But they do. Jesus didn’t say “somebody will help them.” But they do.

Let the truth rise like smoke. If America insists on normalizing rape culture through silence, excuses, politics, and selective morality, then let it be known, “We will not be quiet. We will not be polite. We will not protect predators. We will not bow to cowardice disguised as Christianity.” We stand on the side of consent, truth, survivors, and actual justice. Not the watered‑down, donor‑approved version preached from pulpits.

And to every person who says, “Why didn’t she leave?” “Why are you still talking about it?” Here’s your answer. Silence is how rape culture survives. And speaking is how we burn it to the ground.

And since we’re already in the deep end, let me go ahead and say the quiet part out loud. I’ve got people in my own family, bless their self‑appointed expertise hearts, who genuinely believe that if they weren’t physically present for the rape, then it simply did not occur. As if trauma requires a witness. As if my pain needs their signature to be valid. As if the only crimes that count are the ones they personally supervise.

Apparently they’ve never heard of how perpetrators keep victims silent. The threats. The manipulation. The shame. The fear. The isolation. The psychological warfare that could make a grown oak tree curl in on itself. They don’t know. Nor do they want to know what happens to a victim’s character the moment she speaks up. The smear campaigns. The disbelief. The “are you sure?” The “don’t ruin his life.” The “you’re exaggerating.” The “you must want money.” The “you’re being dramatic.” The “that was so long ago.”

Look no further than the current political climate. And the biases people cling to like life rafts. Truth is dangerous because truth destroys propaganda. Truth makes people wrong. Truth forces accountability. And Lord knows some folks would rather swallow a cactus whole than admit they were wrong.

Not all religious people. But let’s be honest about the ratios. This isn’t a blanket statement about every religious person or every church. I’ve met the ones who actually step into the uncomfortable places. The ones who sit with survivors. Walk into homeless camps. Support LGBTQ+ youth. Visit prisons. And show compassion without needing applause.

Those people? They’re angels in work boots. They don’t need a spotlight. They don’t need a plaque. They don’t need a Facebook post. But they are the minority. The majority? They’re too busy polishing their image. Protecting their comfort. And pretending that if they ignore the suffering long enough, it’ll politely disappear like a casserole dish after a funeral.

Most people can’t handle the truth because the truth would force them to confront their own biases. Their own silence. Their own complicity. Their own selective morality. Their own willingness to defend power over people. And that’s why they cling to denial like it’s a family heirloom. Because if they admit the truth, my truth, your truth, the truth of millions of survivors, then they have to admit that the world they defend is built on harm. And that’s a reckoning they’re not ready for.

In my life, I have paid a very big price. And I’m still paying it with every day, every breath, every memory that wasn’t mine to still carry 29 years later. But it got stapled to my soul anyway. Because a culture built on silence and excuses decided my pain was inconvenient.

And this is what rape culture does. It hands the bill to the victim. And gives the perpetrator a coupon code for sympathy. In a world shaped by the likes of Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, Donald Trump, and their other active participants. And a political environment where some people normalize. Excuse. Or minimize harm. I’m over here begging folks to simply stand on the side of consent. Not on the side of “well, boys will be boys” or “that’s just locker room talk.”

Because let’s be honest. It’s not. There’s a whole slice of society that treats sexual violence like a PR inconvenience instead of the life‑shattering trauma it is. A whole slice that will twist themselves into pretzels to defend power, wealth, and status. Even when the harm is undeniable. Be the person who stands with survivors. Not the person who shrugs at abuse. Simply because the abuser is someone you voted for. Prayed with. Or admired on TV.

Be the person who actually says, “No. Consent matters. People matter. Accountability matters.” The alternative is the cultural shrug. The political excuses. The religious silence is exactly how rape culture stays alive and well. And I refuse to pretend otherwise. We’re done whispering. The fire is lit. And my voice is getting louder. Thanks for reading! What are your experiences with this?

Affirmation: My truth is not too heavy. My story is not too late. My voice is not too loud. I am the fire that exposes what others fear to face.
